We’re so excited to welcome Stephanie Gonzalez-Galvan, Ph.D., our newest Postdoctoral Resident at the Aguirre Center for Inclusive Psychotherapy!

Stephanie is a bilingual Mexican American/Latina therapist and First-Gen professional who provides therapy in English, Spanish, or a combination of both. Her approach is warm, relational, collaborative, and culturally responsive, creating space for clients to explore not only what they’re experiencing, but how their relationships, identities, families, cultures, and lived experiences have shaped them.

Grounded in Interpersonal Process Therapy, Stephanie helps clients better understand relationship patterns, strengthen communication and boundaries, navigate anxiety and life transitions, and develop more authentic and meaningful ways of connecting with themselves and others.

She is especially passionate about supporting Latinx/Hispanic, BIPOC, immigrant, and First-Generation clients, including those navigating identity, relationships, family and cultural expectations, and the experience of living between cultures.

We’re incredibly happy to have Stephanie as part of the ACIP community. 💛

What does it cost to constantly read the room?

For many BIPOC professionals, going to work can involve more than simply doing the job. It may also mean thinking carefully about how you speak, how you express disagreement, whether your emotions will be interpreted differently, or which parts of your identity feel safe enough to share.

Code-switching can be adaptive. It can be strategic. Sometimes, it can even be protective.

But when you spend much of your day monitoring how others perceive you, that constant adjustment can become exhausting.

In our newest blog post, “The Mental Health Cost of Code-Switching: When Being Yourself at Work Doesn’t Feel Safe,” we explore the emotional labor of code-switching, racialized ideas of professionalism, workplace belonging, and what happens when the performance follows you home.

Most importantly, we talk about why culturally responsive therapy isn't about telling you to “just be yourself” in environments where authenticity may carry real consequences. It's about creating more choice—and having at least one space where you don't have to work so hard to be understood.

The Intersection of Gender and Culture: Addressing Machismo in Therapy

Cultural values around masculinity don’t exist in a vacuum. For many clients—particularly within Latinx and BIPOC communities—concepts like machismo are deeply shaped by history, culture, migration, and systems of power.

In this post, we explore:
🧩 How machismo can show up in the therapy room
🌎 The cultural and relational contexts that shape gender roles
🛠️ How therapists can approach these conversations with nuance, humility, and care
💬 Ways to support clients in expanding emotional expression without pathologizing culture

Thoughtful, culturally responsive therapy requires us to hold complexity—not stereotypes.

🌧️➡️🌈 Face the Storm. That’s Where the Growth Lives.

At Aguirre Center for Inclusive Psychotherapy, we know that healing doesn’t come from avoiding the hard stuff—it comes from leaning into it. 💪🏽✨

Just like storms nourish the earth and make way for new growth, the challenges we face in life can open the door to transformation. It takes courage to sit with discomfort, to process emotions, and to explore parts of ourselves we may have been taught to hide.

🌱 Growth happens when we allow ourselves to move through the storm, not around it. In therapy, you don’t have to weather it alone—we walk with you, honoring your story and your strength.

💭 Remember: The storm won’t last forever, but the growth you gain from facing it will.
