Emory Saint Joseph's Hospital News, information and inside stories from Emory Saint Joseph's Hospital. What started in a small house on Baker Street is now a 32-acre campus in North Atlanta.

Emory Saint Joseph’s Hospital is Atlanta's longest-serving hospital, founded by the Sisters of Mercy in 1880. Four sisters, with just 50 cents between them, opened the Atlanta Hospital — the city’s first after the Civil War. Our mission is the same today as it was over 130 years ago — to provide compassionate care, excellence, commitment, and integrity especially to those in need.

For years, Patrick Bellamy lived with kidney disease, but by late 2025 his condition had progressed to kidney failure, making even simple daily activities difficult. Following nearly two years on dialysis, he learned he urgently needed a kidney transplant. Through the living donor screening process, Patrick's sister, Ashley, was found to be a match and donated her kidney, giving her brother a second chance at life.

Today, Patrick is recovering well and has returned to a healthier, more active life. Their story highlights the powerful impact of living organ donation and the extraordinary differences donors can make.

At Emory Healthcare, the No. 1 kidney transplant and living donor program in the U.S. by volume, Patrick received advanced transplant care from our nationally recognized team, which combines expertise, innovation and compassion to help patients achieve better outcomes.

Improving health starts with meeting people where they are.

We're proud to celebrate one year of Winship Cancer Institute of Emory University's mobile prostate cancer screening program and the impact it's making across Georgia. By bringing free PSA screenings directly into communities, the program is helping expand access to preventive care and support earlier detection for those who need it most.

Today, we joined first responders from across Georgia in remembering and honoring the lives lost on September 11. As hundreds climbed Stone Mountain, observed a moment of silence and raised the American flag, we paused together in reflection, gratitude and remembrance.

We honor the courage, sacrifice and service of those who answered the call that day and those who continue to serve our communities every day.
