The Piedmont Community is greatly saddened by the passing of Shouky Shaheen, and we extend our deepest sympathies to his family during this difficult time.

Shouky’s philanthropy has impacted countless people. We are honored to carry forth his and his wife's legacies with educational conferences happening in the Shaheen Auditorium at Piedmont Atlanta and life-saving care occurring daily in The Doris Shaheen Breast Health Center, the Doris Shaheen Breast Health Imaging Center and through the Doris Shaheen Emergency Department Fund.

Shouky made an indelible impact on countless lives through his time, his leadership and his philanthropy, and we are humbled to continue his important work through the care we provide to our communities.

As a continuation of his transformational support here at Piedmont, the family has requested that, in lieu of flowers, people consider making donations to the Piedmont Atlanta Hospital Doris Shaheen Breast Health Center Fund or the Piedmont Atlanta Hospital Doris Shaheen Emergency Department Fund.

For William Bryant, the chapel at Piedmont Atlanta holds a special place in his heart.

Last December, he spent hours there praying for his wife, Renee, and newborn daughter, Elise, who arrived via emergency C-section and later spent several weeks in the NICU.

This month, during NICU Awareness Month, William and Renee returned to that same chapel to baptize Elise.

"We truly believe the whole NICU staff brought our baby back to life," William said.

We were honored to be part of this beautiful full-circle moment. 🧡

Piedmont Atlanta recently joined Ebenezer French Sda Church Atlanta Atlanta for its annual health fair, helping more than 40 attendees Know Their Numbers through blood pressure and glucose screenings.

About one in four participants had elevated blood pressure, giving our team an opportunity to share health information and connect attendees with primary care resources.

A special thank you to Piedmont physician Dr. Orvenie Bernardin for helping organize the event and bringing preventive care directly into the community. 🧡

A first for Piedmont Atlanta and an important milestone for patients living with chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH). ❤️

Piedmont Atlanta recently completed its first pulmonary thromboendarterectomy (PTE), a highly specialized surgery and the only potentially curative treatment for CTEPH.

The procedure represents an important expansion of Piedmont’s Pulmonary Hypertension program, bringing together specialists across pulmonology and cardiovascular surgery to evaluate patients and determine the best path forward through multidisciplinary care.

We’re proud to celebrate this milestone alongside patient Gregory Thompson and the team who helped make it possible: pulmonologist and pulmonary hypertension specialist Dr. Chad Miller, nurse practitioner Lori Reed and cardiovascular surgeon Dr. Christian Bermudez.

This first procedure marks another step forward in expanding access to advanced pulmonary hypertension care for patients at Piedmont.

Cloudy skies didn’t stop Atlanta from getting some steps in. ☁️👟

Piedmont Atlanta recently joined the community at Cook Park for Walk with a Doc, where Dr. Lorel Garnica-Moya and Dr. Andrew Page helped turn a morning walk into an opportunity to talk about health, wellness, and simple ways to stay active.

Attendees also had access to free blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol and BMI screenings, along with fresh produce and other community health resources.

Thank you to Eat Right Atlanta Food Co-Op and the Atlanta Beltline for helping bring health and wellness a little closer to home. 🧡

For patients navigating an unfamiliar diagnosis, a difficult treatment, or a stressful hospital stay, comfort can make a meaningful difference. Sometimes, that comfort arrives on four paws.

Through Piedmont’s partnership with Happy Tails Pet Therapy, certified volunteer therapy dogs visit patients and staff across metro Atlanta. Their presence can help ease anxiety, reduce stress, and provide a calming emotional connection during moments that may feel overwhelming.

By bringing moments of comfort and reassurance into the hospital environment, programs like pet therapy help create a more supportive, compassionate experience for the people we care for.

Their visits are a reminder that even small moments of support can have a meaningful impact on a patient’s experience. 🧡

When hip and leg soreness started slowing Mark McKay down, he thought it might be a nerve issue. His primary care physician, Dr. Korie, suspected there could be more to the story.

An X-ray revealed osteoarthritis in Mark’s right hip, setting him on the path to a hip replacement and physical therapy with Piedmont Orthopedics.

Recovery meant relearning some of the everyday movements most of us never think twice about, from tying his shoes to simply moving with ease. But with a care team Mark describes as “phenomenal,” he kept moving forward.

Today, the longtime 95.5 WSB traffic reporter is back on the air, back to doing what he loves and moving more like himself again.

For Mark, the road back started with a primary care physician who recognized there might be more going on.

Piedmont Heart is No. 1 in the Southeast. 🧡

U.S. News and World Report has named Piedmont Heart Institute the best program in the Southeast for cardiology, heart and vascular surgery in its 2026–2027 Best Hospitals rankings. And for the first time, Piedmont Heart ranks among the top 20 heart programs in the nation.

Piedmont Heart also earned “High Performing” recognition in all eight heart procedures and conditions evaluated.

“Placing among the nation’s top 20 heart programs and earning the top spot in the Southeast is a testament to the exceptional physicians, nurses and clinical teams whose expertise and compassion impact patients every day,” said Patrick M. Battey, M.D., chief executive officer of Piedmont Atlanta and a Piedmont Heart physician.

The recognition extends beyond heart care. Piedmont Atlanta was also rated High Performing in gastroenterology and GI surgery, geriatrics, and neurology and neurosurgery, placing it among the top 10% nationally for care in those specialties.

The annual Best Hospitals list is designed to help patients and providers identify hospitals that excel in the care they may need.

Primary care is often where the journey begins.

After noticing an unusual lump, Brad's primary care doctor quickly coordinated testing and connected him to the next steps, helping him get answers without delay.

Looking back, Brad says that timely, coordinated care put him on a path he never expected, but one he didn't have to navigate alone.

"The personal and competent care I received at Piedmont has put me on a path to healing so I can continue making memories with my family. For that, I am forever grateful."

Brad's story is a reminder that a primary care provider is more than someone you see for an annual checkup. They're your first call when something doesn't feel right, helping connect you to the care you need when every moment matters.

There was plenty to cheer for at Miracle Kids Night with the Columbus Clingstones, but one of the biggest moments belonged to Greenlee Lamb.

A former patient at the Piedmont Bill and Olivia Amos Children’s Hospital and the 2026 Children's Miracle Network, Greenlee threw out the ceremonial first pitch before the game, surrounded by her family, care team, and a community cheering her on.

Thank you to the Columbus Clingstones for helping celebrate kids like Greenlee and supporting Children’s Miracle Network. 🧡

The clinical research happening at Piedmont today is helping shape the care patients receive tomorrow.

In 2025, 1,392 patients enrolled in clinical trials at Piedmont. By year-end, 357 active trials were underway across our system, with more than 200 providers conducting research. Behind those numbers are patients accessing new treatments, physicians advancing medicine and communities benefiting from care informed by research.

In episode two of Care That Connects: Innovation Edition, we’re exploring how Piedmont research is helping expand access, improve outcomes and bring new possibilities closer to home.

Five months after undergoing a quintuple bypass surgery, Greg returned to the place where his second chance began.

Only this time, he wasn’t arriving as a patient.

He ran past the hospital that helped save his life while taking part in the Peachtree Road Race.

Recovery isn’t measured by miles alone. It’s found in every step forward, every milestone reached, and every reminder of how far you’ve come.
We’re honored to have been part of Greg’s journey and grateful to celebrate this incredible moment alongside him. 🧡

Before her heart transplant seven years ago at Piedmont Atlanta Hospital, Bonnie Rohner’s heart couldn’t take a trip to the grocery store.

In just a few days, she'll travel to Denver to compete in basketball, volleyball, pickleball and table tennis in the national Transplant Games.

Bonnie received her first open-heart surgery at 16 to fix a hole in her heart. After cardiac arrest in 2018, she was placed on the the transplant list and received a new heart at Piedmont Atlanta in October 2019.

Now, she'll join transplant recipients and living donors from across the country to showcase what's possible through organ donation and transplantation.
