MON & FRI — morning classes
TUE & WED — night classes, 1 hour
THURSDAY — night class, 4 hours
SATURDAY — 9 AM to 4:30 PM, 8 hours

All live interactive Zoom, Eastern Time. Cameras on, verbal roll call, names verified. Attendance goes to your probation officer or the court within 24 hours of class.

Bring the paperwork that says how many hours you owe. People are told four and end up owing twelve more often than you would think, and finding that out in week one is better than finding it out in month three.

Information for attorneys, probation officers and pre-trial services.

Live interactive Zoom — cameras on, verbal roll call, names verified. Courts generally do not accept self-paced online courses, and this is not one.

Reporting: attendance to the probation officer or the court within 24 hours of the class. Progress reports resent on request, any time, at no charge.

Hours: misdemeanor cases typically run 8 to 12 hours, felony cases 12 to 16. Requirements vary widely by jurisdiction, so confirm the required number before your client enrolls rather than after.

Classes run six days a week, mornings and nights, plus a Saturday eight-hour intensive. There is no waiting for a new group to form — a client can start this week.

Five things people believe about calming down that turn out not to be true.

MYTH: "Just count to ten."
FACT: Counting to ten is a myth. By ten it is already said. What changes the outcome is a breath that slows the body down, not a number you reach.

MYTH: "If I have gone quiet, I have calmed down."
FACT: Shutdown is below the window of tolerance, not inside it. Numb is not regulated — it is the other side of the same wall, and the people around you can usually tell.

MYTH: "Breathing exercises are soft."
FACT: In class I took my own heart rate from 93 down to 69 with box breathing, on camera. Your blood pressure does not care what you think of the technique.

MYTH: "We can settle this if we just keep talking."
FACT: Past about 100 beats a minute you are flooded. Nothing decided up there holds up in the morning. Stop, breathe it down, come back.

MYTH: "I snapped out of nowhere."
FACT: The body moved first — jaw, shoulders, breath, voice. There is always a runway. Learning your own is most of the work.

You cannot think at 110 beats a minute.

People hear that and assume it is a figure of speech. It is not. Around 80 beats a minute you can still have the conversation. Past 100 you are flooded, and whatever gets decided up there does not survive the night.

Above the window of tolerance you are in fight or flight — heart rate climbing, jaw tight, voice getting louder and faster. Below it you are shut down, flat and numb, which everybody around you reads as calm because it is quiet. Inside the window you can think and feel at the same time, and that is the only place a disagreement actually goes anywhere.

The way back in is box breathing. In for four. Hold for four. Out for four. Hold for four. In class I took my own heart rate from 93 down to 69 doing exactly that, on camera, in a few minutes. When four is not enough, double the exhale: 4-4-8-4.

Practice it at a red light, in a waiting room, before you open a text you already know you are not going to like. A tool you have only read about does not work at 100 beats a minute.

Three zones. Only one of them can hold a conversation.

ABOVE THE WINDOW — flooded. Fight or flight. Heart rate climbing, jaw tight, voice louder and faster. The thinking part of the brain is not driving anymore.

INSIDE THE WINDOW — calm and alert. The only zone where you can think and feel at the same time. You can be angry here and still pick your words.

BELOW THE WINDOW — shutdown. Freeze. Numb. People read this one as calm because it is silent. It is not calm.

Getting back in is what you do in the moment. Widening the window is what repetition does over months. That is what the hours are actually buying you.

The rest of the set: the six body warning signs and which one shows up first for you, the pulse test, box breathing 4-4-4-4, and the eight-second exhale you build toward with practice.

Turn the volume down to where you can still drive.

That line comes up in almost every class, because people arrive thinking anger management means never getting angry. It does not. You are allowed to be angry. You are not allowed to be so flooded that the next ninety seconds decide the next two years.

There is a zone where you can think and feel at the same time. Above it you are in fight or flight. Below it you are shut down and numb. Most of what we do in class is teaching people to notice which zone they are in — and then to get back.

This week we are working through the window of tolerance: the three zones, the body signals that tell you which one you are in, and box breathing.

If you are working against a court date, Saturday is eight hours in a single day and is usually the fastest route. If you are fitting this around a job, the Tuesday and Wednesday night classes are an hour each.

This week we covered the rules of engagement and the proper timeout. Next week picks up from there.

Information for attorneys, probation officers and pre-trial services.

Live interactive video. Not an online course. Camera on, face visible, verbal participation in every session.
Documentation straight to you. Enrollment letters and completion certificates.
Signed intake before any contact. No participant is discussed until the release is on file.
A behavioral curriculum you can point to. The rules of engagement, the proper timeout, the ABC model, the 2 C’s, emotional intelligence and conflict styles.

One point worth passing along to clients: this is a live, interactive Zoom class and should be described that way — not as an “online” course. Self-paced online programs are frequently rejected by courts, and the wording a client uses at a review can decide whether the hours count.

This week’s teaching was the rules of engagement and the proper timeout, which gives you something specific to ask a client about rather than whether they feel calmer.

Five things people believe about arguing that turn out not to hold up.

MYTH: "A timeout is just walking away from the argument."
FACT: A walkout is silent. A timeout is announced, has a stated length, and you come back. Opposite behaviors.

MYTH: "If I am not yelling, I am fighting fair."
FACT: Volume is one rule out of ten. Stonewalling, eye-rolling, dragging up the past and threatening to leave all break the rules at a conversational volume.

MYTH: "We should stay up and settle it tonight."
FACT: Past about thirty minutes you are grinding, not solving. Stopping and returning clear-headed is the stronger move.

MYTH: "Use the break to get your facts straight."
FACT: Spend the timeout proving you were right and you come back armed instead of calm. The break is for your heart rate, not your case.

MYTH: "Fighting fair means somebody has to give in."
FACT: These are rules of engagement, not a verdict. They keep the disagreement inside a boundary.

The second one catches the most people. Somebody will tell me, honestly, that they never raise their voice — and everything they describe doing is on the list. Silence can be as hostile as shouting, and the person on the other end of it knows that.

The proper timeout has four moves, and the one people skip is the last one.

Call it. Out loud. “I need twenty minutes.”
Time it. Say the number before you walk away.
Lower it. The target is a resting heart rate, back under 80.
Return to it. Same day if you can, because you said you would.

Start at thirty minutes. Over weeks, work it down — 25, 20, 15, 12, 10. The body genuinely learns to come down faster, the same way it learns anything else you practice.

Two things to avoid. Do not use the break to build your case; if you spend twenty minutes proving you were right, you come back armed instead of calm. And do not leave the length open. “I am going out” is not a timeout.
