“Heaven on Earth” HOW TO: a human world characterized by love, beauty, freedom, belonging, enoughness, meaningful work, reverence for life, and dramatically less unnecessary suffering.
Create human beings who no longer need to manufacture suffering in order to regulate themselves.
That sounds individual, but its consequences are profoundly collective.
A great deal of what makes Earth hellish—war, domination, exploitation, cruelty, compulsive consumption, tribalism, scapegoating, addiction to power—comes from fear, shame, scarcity, unprocessed trauma, and identification with a defended ego. Changing institutions matters enormously, but institutions are ultimately expressions of human consciousness.
So I would work from the inside outward, at several levels simultaneously:
Learn to inhabit yourself.
Become increasingly capable of noticing and naming fear, anger, envy, judgment, craving, shame and defensiveness without automatically acting them out. This is not becoming “nice.” It is becoming conscious.
Stop exporting your suffering.
Perhaps one of the most powerful ethical principles imaginable is: I will take responsibility for transforming my pain rather than requiring someone else to carry it. Not repressing it—transforming it.
Practice the ordinary forms of love.
Listen. Tell the truth kindly. Keep agreements. Repair when you cause harm. Feed people. Include people. Protect children. Befriend the lonely. Make beautiful things. Be generous when you can. These sound almost embarrassingly small compared with saving civilization, but civilization is made of billions of such encounters.
Create little fields of Heaven.
Your home. A friendship. A marriage. A therapy room. A classroom. A neighborhood. A workplace. A garden. A dinner table. Make each place you actually influence more truthful, beautiful, peaceful and alive. Don't wait for humanity to awaken before beginning.
Build systems that make goodness easier.
Consciousness alone isn't sufficient. People need food, housing, healthcare, education, safety, meaningful participation, functioning institutions and a livable planet. A heavenly society would design its systems so that cooperation, dignity and stewardship are easier than exploitation.
Protect freedom while cultivating responsibility.
Attempts to create utopia become dangerous when somebody decides they know what everyone else's enlightenment should look like. Heaven imposed by force quickly becomes hell. A mature civilization would allow enormous diversity while placing strong boundaries around exploitation and harm.
Shift from scarcity consciousness toward sufficiency.
Much destructive behavior comes from more: more money, status, possessions, territory, attention, certainty. Heaven might depend less upon everybody acquiring everything they want than upon enough people discovering enough.
Recover reverence.
Treat animals, forests, oceans, bodies, children, elders and future generations as intrinsically valuable rather than merely useful. Whether one calls this God, Soul, interconnectedness, or simply ecological reality, reverence changes behavior.
Make awakening contagious rather than compulsory.
People are rarely transformed by being told how unconscious they are. They are transformed through encounters with people who are unusually present, free, loving and alive. Embodiment persuades better than preaching.
And then there is a paradox I find particularly important:
We probably cannot create Heaven on Earth by trying to eliminate everything unpleasant.
A heavenly Earth would still contain death, grief, disappointment, disagreement, aging, uncertainty and heartbreak. Otherwise we're imagining not Heaven but permanent comfort.
Perhaps Heaven on Earth is a world in which suffering is met differently.
Grief is accompanied.
Conflict becomes dialogue.
Difference doesn't require hatred.
Power becomes stewardship.
Wealth becomes circulation.
Pain becomes something to metabolize rather than transmit.
Death makes life precious rather than meaningless.
And there is an even more radical possibility contained in many mystical traditions:
Heaven isn't primarily something humanity constructs. It is something humanity gradually becomes capable of perceiving and expressing.
In short, HOW TO CREATE HEAVEN: Heal what makes us afraid, awaken what makes us loving, and organize society so that the loving choice becomes easier to make.
