🚀 Ben Burch, MD, joined Atlanta Spine Institute’s Sandy Springs, Ga., location, according to a June 3 news release shared with Becker’s.

Dr. Burch has expertise in endoscopic spine surgery, and in 2025 he performed the state’s first endoscopic spinal fusion.

“Joining Atlanta Spine Institute allows me to bring the most advanced endoscopic solutions to even more patients,” Dr. Burch said in the release. “Plas James, MD, and I together are growing an already well-established, comprehensive spine surgery practice focused on the least invasive, most effective options available.”

Dr. Burch earned his medical degree at the University of Alabama at Birmingham Marnix E. Heersink School of Medicine, and he completed his residency at the University of Missouri-Columbia. ➡️ https://www.beckersspine.com/spine/dr-ben-burch-joins-atlanta-spine-institute/

Teaching has become one of the most meaningful parts of my work as a surgeon.

There is something powerful about taking the knowledge that once took years to build and sharing it with someone who is standing where you once stood.

Endoscopic spine surgery is highly technical. It requires precision, patience, and a deep respect for anatomy. But the real impact happens when more surgeons learn how to do it safely and thoughtfully.

That means more patients may have access to less invasive options. More communities may have surgeons trained in advanced techniques. More people may benefit from procedures that can reduce tissue disruption and support faster recovery.

For me, teaching is not just about showing a technique.

It is about helping move the field forward.

It is about giving other surgeons the confidence, structure, and understanding they need to offer better care.

And honestly, there are few things more rewarding than seeing knowledge continue beyond your own hands.

Back pain is common. But some symptoms are never “just back pain.”

As spine surgeons, we worry most when pain comes with sudden weakness, numbness, trouble walking, or changes in bladder/bowel control. Those symptoms can mean the nerves are under serious pressure — and timing matters.

The scary part? It can happen even to young, active, healthy people.

Your body usually gives warning signs. The key is not ignoring them when they suddenly change.

Have you ever had a symptom you dismissed at first… but later realized it was serious?

A little time away from the OR.

For surgeons, rest is not always easy. The same focus, discipline, and responsibility that help in surgery can make it hard to fully slow down.

But recovery matters too.

Time with family, movement, fresh air, and a change of scenery are not just “vacation moments.” They help reset the mind before another season of patient care, long clinic days, and early mornings in the operating room.

Behind every surgery is a person who also has to protect his energy, health, and perspective.

Back soon.

Whether you’re heading to the beach, traveling with family, or finally taking a few days away from your normal routine, enjoy it fully.

Move a little, rest when you need to, stay safe, and don’t turn vacation into another job.

Your spine can handle a lot more when your whole body gets a chance to recover too.

Have a great summer, y’all.

Your spine is usually not injured by one random movement.

More often, the problem starts when your body gives you a warning — and you keep going anyway.

Pain during exercise, lifting, or daily movement is not something to “push through” just to prove toughness.

It’s information.

Listen early. Adjust early. Protect your spine before a small issue becomes a bigger one.

Follow for Clarity.
