Maintenance (or Response Maintenance) is the long term goal for most skill acquisition. It occurs when the reinforcement schedule is thinned, allowing behaviors to be reinforced by naturally occurring contingencies. For example: Monica’s mom used clap when she first learned to tie her shoes. Now, Monica is reinforced by walking without tripping over her shoelaces! 👟 ✨

Intermittent reinforcement is best for reinforcing skills that are already in the learner’s repertoire. 🧠 It’s like saying “You already have this skill, but I encourage you to keep practicing it.” Intermittent reinforcement promotes skill maintenance over time. 🛠️📆

A response cost removes something the learner finds reinforcing to discourage the preceding behavior. ❌ In most cases, this procedure is used with generalized reinforcers provided as auxiliary enrichment—not primary reinforcers or materials needed for the learner to have a comfortable and successful day. Think tokens, clip charts and school currency that can be redeemed for small toys🪎—not food items, nap time, or their classroom desk. 🙅🏽‍♀️

Continuous reinforcement is also known as an FR1 (fixed ratio, 1:1) schedule of reinforcement. It’s most appropriate for encouraging behaviors that are new to the learner. 🧸
