Brazil is the only country currently known to have a national federal law requiring every newborn in hospitals and maternity facilities to receive a standardized tongue-tie (lingual frenulum) evaluation before discharge.

Enacted in 2014, Brazil's "Tongue-Tie Test" (Teste da Linguinha) law was designed to promote early identification of tongue-ties that may affect feeding and oral function. While many countries recommend evaluating infants with breastfeeding difficulties, Brazil stands apart with a nationwide legal requirement for universal newborn screening.

⚠️ ABM community — this one is urgent.

On September 1, UnitedHealthcare is changing how it reimburses lactation care. The new policy will only pay for one session per visit and will no longer cover claims billed for the infant, effectively cutting reimbursement for dyad care.

This impacts IBCLCs, physicians, and most importantly, the families who depend on covered lactation support during the most critical weeks postpartum.
The good news? There's still time to push back, and there are four letter templates ready to go for providers, parents, and employers.

Read the full breakdown and take action before September 1. https://paperlesslactation.com/blog/fight-uhc/

🚨 In emergencies, breastfeeding can be lifesaving.

Whether during natural disasters, power outages, displacement, or other crises, breast milk provides safe nutrition, hydration, immune protection, and comfort without the need for clean water, electricity, or formula preparation.

A recently reported story from Venezuela has highlighted the potential role breastfeeding can play during disasters, although some details of the account are still being independently verified and may or may not be an accurate story.

Some news outlets are reporting a Venezualan mother kept 3 children alive with breast milk for 11 days after the catastrophic earthquake as they remained trapped by rubble.

Whether all the details are accurate or not, breastfeeding is a critical intervention during emergencies. Human milk is:

✅ Always available and requires no clean water or electricity.

✅ Sterile and nutritionally complete for infants.

✅ Rich in antibodies that help protect babies from infections, which are more common after disasters.

✅ A source of hydration and comfort when access to food, water, and medical care is disrupted.

👇🏽 Have you ever thought about infant feeding as part of an emergency plan?

Research from the Hartmann Human Lactation Research Group at the University of Western Australia showed that from one month until six months of age, babies drink on average 800 mL/day. The amount varies only minimally with age and weight, contrary to previous belief, although the average intake from baby to baby can vary from 500 mL to 1350 mL/day. After about six weeks, the mother's breasts typically stabilize milk production to match the baby's needs when the mother breastfeeds directly and does not express additional milk. While the baby may eat more at each feed, the total amount of breast milk produced per day remains relatively consistent. As the baby grows, the composition of breast milk changes to better meet that individual baby's changing nutritional needs. For example, the fat content in breast milk can increase as the baby gets older. There's no need for breast milk volume to continue increasing as the baby gets bigger. Baby's growth rate slows down in the second half of the first year, and they don't need more calories to grow. Around six months when solid foods are normally introduced, breastmilk intake may gradually reduce, however milk remains the major component of baby's diet for the first year of life.
