June is a special month for the ALK-positive community.
In 2023, ALK-positive Awareness Month was officially declared in memory of Gina Hollenbeck — a beloved patient, advocate, and light in this community whose legacy continues to inspire everything we do. June was chosen to honor her, and this month carries her spirit forward.
There is a story of two prisoners looking out the same small window from the same cell.
One looked down and saw mud. The other looked up and saw stars.
When you receive a cancer diagnosis, life can feel exactly like that cell. The weight of
uncertainty is heavy. And in those moments, the choice of where to look can make all
the difference.
Gina Hollenbeck chose to look at the stars — and she used those three words “Mud or Stars” to guide her own journey through ALK-positive cancer. A reminder to keep that bright perspective, to keep pushing forward, to keep believing in what is possible.
Her family still lives by that motto today.
Throughout June, we are working to accelerate research, support clinical trials, advance patient-led innovation, and strengthen programs serving the global ALK-positive community.
Gina will always be our reminder to keep looking up. 💙
