Earwax (also called cerumen) plays an important role in protecting and cleaning your ears, but too much of it can sometimes lead to discomfort, blockage, or changes in hearing.

Before reaching for a cotton swab, learn these 5 important things about earwax and how to safely care for your ears!

1. Earwax is important
Earwax isn’t just buildup, it helps protect, moisturize, and clean your ear canal. As it naturally moves outward, it carries dirt, dead skin, and debris with it.

2. Most people don’t need to clean their ears on their own
Your ears are designed to clean themselves, and earwax usually moves out of the ear canal naturally. Simply clean the outside of your ear with a damp washcloth when needed.

3.Impacted earwax can become painful
When earwax becomes trapped or builds up, it can cause ear pain, ringing, decreased hearing, dizziness, or odor. Earbuds, earplugs, and hearing aids can sometimes contribute to buildup.

4. Cotton swabs can do more harm than good
Putting cotton swabs inside your ear can push wax deeper, irritate the ear canal, and potentially cause injury or infection. A good rule to remember: keep cotton swabs outside the ear canal.

5. Our providers at Piedmont ENT can safely remove any impacted wax
If earwax becomes impacted or is affecting your hearing, a healthcare provider can safely remove it using specialized tools. Avoid digging it out yourself, especially if you’re experiencing pain or hearing changes.
