Emotion regulation skills help individuals understand and manage emotional responses more effectively. These skills focus on recognizing emotions, reducing vulnerability, and responding in ways that are more aligned with long-term goals. For many adolescents, this can be a new way of approaching emotional experiences.

Strong emotions are not the problem. Difficulty managing those emotions is what often leads to challenges. Emotion regulation provides tools to navigate intensity without becoming overwhelmed or reactive.

At Hillside, clients practice these skills regularly across different settings. Over time, they learn how to identify emotions earlier and respond in more effective ways. This helps support greater stability and improved relationships.

Treatment is not only about supporting the client. It also involves helping families build skills, understanding, and confidence. Caregivers often play a key role in how progress is supported outside of therapeutic sessions.

At Hillside, families learn many of the same DBT skills their child is practicing. This shared language helps reduce confusion and creates more consistency at home. It also allows caregivers to respond more effectively during difficult moments.

Over time, families often feel more equipped to manage challenges and support their child's progress. This shift is an important part of long-term success. It helps ensure that progress continues after treatment ends.

Join Hillside for our next in-person panel discussion about The Loneliness Epidemic on Friday, June 5th from 8:30-9:30am

Across the country, more children and adolescents are reporting feelings of loneliness, disconnection, and a lack of belonging. Loneliness is not simply about being alone. It is the experience of not feeling seen, understood, or connected, even when others are present.

At the same time, caregivers, especially those supporting adolescents with mental health challenges, often experience their own form of loneliness, feeling overwhelmed, isolated, or unsure where to turn for support.

What this panel will discuss:
πŸ’™ What is driving the rise in loneliness among children, adolescents, and society at large
πŸ’™How loneliness shows up in young people, including its connection to shame, withdrawal, and isolation
πŸ’™The often-overlooked loneliness experienced by caregivers
πŸ’™Practical, DBT-informed strategies to help young people build connections and tolerate social discomfort
πŸ’™How caregivers can respond in ways that strengthen relationships while staying supported themselves

Join us for a thoughtful and practical conversation focused on connection, understanding, and the shared human need to feel seen and valued.

Safety in mental health treatment is not only about responding to crises. Much of the work happens before a crisis occurs. This includes identifying patterns, building routines, and strengthening skills that help prevent escalation.

At Hillside, clinicians focus on helping clients recognize early warning signs and respond differently when stress begins to rise. This proactive approach allows for intervention before situations become more intense. It also helps clients feel more in control of their responses.

Families often find reassurance in knowing that safety is built into the structure of care. It is not something that only appears during emergencies. It is a consistent part of how treatment is designed and delivered.

Setbacks are a normal and expected part of the treatment process. They can feel discouraging, especially when progress has been made, but they often provide important information about what still needs support. Avoiding setbacks entirely is not a realistic goal.

At Hillside, setbacks are approached with curiosity rather than judgment. Clinicians work with clients and families to understand what led to the situation and what skills could be strengthened moving forward. This helps shift the focus from failure to learning.

Over time, these moments become opportunities to build resilience. Clients learn how to recover more quickly and apply skills more effectively. Progress is not about perfection, but about the ability to move through challenges with increasing stability.

The Experience DBT Day Program provides a structured and intensive level of care while allowing clients to continue living at home. Teens participate in a full day of therapeutic programming that includes individual therapy, skills groups, family sessions, and experiential activities. This level of care bridges the gap between outpatient therapy and residential treatment.

The program is designed for clients who need more support than weekly therapy, but do not require 24-hour care. It offers a consistent routine where skills can be learned and practiced throughout the day. This structure helps support stability.

Clients are not only learning concepts. They are actively applying skills in real time with guidance from clinicians. Over time, this repetition helps build confidence and prepares clients to transition to less intensive levels of care with stronger tools in place.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month! Join us for an online discussion, Raising Neurodivergent Kids: ADHD, Autism and Real Life, on Friday May 29th at 12pm.

When a child is neurodivergent, whether that shows up as ADHD, autism, or both, the day-to-day can feel like a constant negotiation between meeting your child where they are and navigating expectations from school, family, and the broader world. This kind of parenting requires a different lens, one grounded in understanding, flexibility, and skill-building.

In this one-hour webinar, a clinician and a parent come together to share both professional insight and lived experience. Together, they will explore how neurodivergence shapes emotional regulation, behavior, communication, and family dynamics, and what support can look like in real life.

Whether you are a parent, caregiver, or professional, this conversation is designed to offer clarity, validation, and tools you can use right away.
