Patrick’s way of communicating may be different, but his ability to connect, love and spread joy is undeniable.

Patrick was diagnosed with profound autism at 3 years old and has been receiving care from Marcus Autism Center since he was young. Through speech therapy, applied behavior analysis (ABA) and community activities, he has gained skills that help him communicate with others and gain independence.

Although Patrick is nonverbal, he expresses his love through fun handshakes he learned from his brother, laughter and an infectious smile that lights up every room he walks into. His days are full of adaptive sports, hiking, movies, and making memories with his friends and family.

When Harper-Lynn stopped reaching developmental milestones and began to regress, her mom knew something wasn't right. Her pediatrician referred them to Marcus Autism Center, where Harper-Lynn was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder just before her 3rd birthday.

Harper-Lynn has received care from Children's and Marcus Autism Center, from inpatient stays to speech, occupational and physical therapy. One of her favorite memories was being able to check out books from the library, where she discovered her love of writing.

Now, a published author, 14-year-old Harper-Lynn wanted to give back to the place that has given her so much. With the help of her mom, she donated dozens of copies of her book to the libraries at all three of Children’s hospital locations, hoping to bring comfort and joy to other patients during their stay.

Through her writing, she aims to inspire other children by showing them that an autism diagnosis doesn't have to stop them from pursuing what they love.

Happy Caregiver Wellness Week!

Last week, Marcus Autism Center celebrated the vital role caregivers play in the autism community. Through caregiver lunches, self-care resources and a community resource fair, caregivers had the opportunity to connect with other families who share similar experiences and learn about the organizations and services available throughout the community.

Thank you to all the caregivers for the dedication, support and care you provide every day!

Duckie got his nickname early—born with a congenital heart defect and undergoing multiple open heart surgeries as an infant, his first sounds after being extubated were an unmistakable “quack.” The nickname stuck and became a perfect fit for his one-of-a-kind personality.

Over the years, Duckie’s family has relied on Children’s for cardiac care, neurology services and, eventually, support through the Marcus Autism Center. After being diagnosed with autism at age 7, Duckie started receiving services in the Complex Behavior Support Program, starting with ABA therapy and transitioning to psychotherapy services.

Today, Duckie is thriving. With tools and strategies tailored to his needs, he continues to build confidence and better navigate moments when he feels overwhelmed. He loves collecting Hot Wheels, spending time with his sister and challenging himself in Hapkido, a comprehensive Korean martial art.

In honor of , we are celebrating Duckie’s growth at Marcus Autism Center and the impact of care and support for children on the autism spectrum.
