I've got a pretty active child, so naturally her 8th birthday included karate Imperatori Martial Arts rock climbing Central Rock Gym and our neighborhood's annual block party, complete with scooters, trampolines and City of Sandy Springs shower. Food wise, we had a lot of it. Started with a scooped bagel and eggs w/coffee at Goldbergs Fine Foods, then walked to Cubanos ATL for Nutella toast after karate, Papa Johns pizza, Publix Super Markets cookie cake, fried chicken tender and potato salad for dinner. What you see is the spike after pizza and cookie cake. Last image is where I'm at now. Overall a stable day with loads of carbs and activity. I'm tired. Hope everyone has a peaceful day Sunday, no matter what happened the previous 24 hours 🙏

Importance of "soaking" your continuous glucose monitor. Most people with are diagnosed later in life, so monitoring your glucose is actually a really great idea even if you're not diabetic and don't have family history of it. However, it is incredibly helpful to wear a CGM when you do have diabetes so you can get alerts and check your blood when necessary. Soaking helps the sensor work better so it has time before you start it to get to know your glucose levels more accurately. I learned this through the grapevine and a few of my clients didn't know this like I did. So I'm sharing it here so you can try it for yourself.

This is hard for me to say. One of the biggest challenges I have as a Type 1 diabetic is motherhood. I think up until that point, I felt like it was all a little easy. The pregnancy, the regimented blood sugars during that time, it was nothing compared to what it was like once she came out. I'm reflecting this week for the diversity in diabetes conference and in doing that, I'm also 1 week away from my daughter's 8th birthday. Having a child and being pregnant the second time was much harder. So much so, that my doctor recommended not to do it again. My spicy, spirited Virgo baby is such a gift. Even though parenting is a challenge, I'm growing. I often ask myself, what is the gift in hard times. I realize the gift is learning how to stick up for myself and advocate, self care and prioritize. She teaches me all of this, every single day and I'm grateful to her.

My T2D dad told me he needed me to motivate him to get back to walking, so I called him at 7a this morning to meet us outside. He told me he's going to leave a note for my kids to wake me up in the morning to tell me to walk with them when I'm 78 yo. I think he said it as a threat, but I said "good I hope they do that." This video is from last weekend and little one pokes her head in.

It's not the game of love or basketball, it's the game of playing diabetes every day AND night. Midnight to be exact...occlusion alarm when you're trying to sleep.

Support: it reminds me that I don't have to define myself based on my illness or pain. I can use my strengths to learn something, connect with someone, support someone else, receive help or ask questions. We often sit around the room and laugh about the absurdities of insurance companies or failures of our systems. One thing we always do though is help one another cope. I love hearing how other people are doing things, like eat, exercise, hacks with insurance or supplies. I learned through the group that I can go through the metal detector, just not the scanner at the airport. I learned about disconnecting at take off and landing. I learned about favorite low snacks, how to bolus for food or bike 50 miles. Someone last night asked about swimming with an Omnipod...all these things get me curious and also hopeful. We also talked about the new culinary medicine program at ADA put on by Adriana Sofia and Katie Carstens . Thank you to Atlanta Diabetes Associates Caroline Williams beidson and Eric Robertson for the support group and the impact you have on patients. Thank you to my supportive spouse Corey Klein for coming with me whenever I ask him to, and my mom Freda Dubrow Meyer for watching our kids for us.

Happy mental health Monday my T1D friends and parents or those that follow just for fun. Hope this message serves you well to help yourself be more self aware today. Learning to acknowledge your emotional and physical experiences means naming it with compassion. You can also validate your feelings and sometimes that's half the way to self regulating.

Believing in yourself to build confidence means also believing in helping, understanding and showing empathy, compassion and support for other people of all shapes, sizes, ethnicities, disabilities and beyond. Two organizations that I'd like to highlight are Catalyst Sports and Lekotek of Georgia both are amazing organizations that deserve support and helping hands.
