Noah Webster fundamentally established the framework for American English and the foundational standards of U.S. education. His work was a deliberate nation building effort to create a distinct cultural identity separate from Britain.

Although raised in a religious home, Webster drifted from his faith early in his career towards deism and moralism. Later in life he experienced a dramatic conversion. He described being "led by a spontaneous impulse to repentance, prayer, and a belief in salvation by grace and the divinity of Christ".

Webster’s conviction that "Education is useless without the Bible" was not a slogan but the operating principle of his life’s work. He famously stated, "I place the Bible above all other books," believing it to be the direct revelation of God’s will.
