On June 19, 1865; more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation…word of freedom finally reached the last enslaved people in Galveston, Texas. Freedom had existed on paper. It just hadn’t reached the “body” yet.
Let’s sit with that for a second….
How often does our nervous system get the memo last?
So much of trauma work is exactly this: the safety is real, the danger has passed, and still… the body keeps bracing. Healing is the slow work of letting the rest of us catch up to a freedom that’s already ours.
Today we honor the ancestors who survived what they were never meant to survive. We honor the quieter, ongoing liberation too; the freedom to feel without overwhelming, to rest without guilt, to heal what was carried long before we got here.
Freedom came in 1865. The work of liberation… within us, between us… continues still. 🤎
Healing is a village effort. Welcome home.
