Featured on Good Morning America today!

Today is the launch date of Dr. Inger Burnett-Ziegler’s informative and life-changing book “Nobody Knows the Trouble I’ve Seen: The Emotional Lives of Black Women”.

It discusses the stress and trauma that far too many Black women endure, how strength has been used as a means of coping with these feelings, and the necessity of confronting our pain in order to heal and move forward. Combined with the latest research, Dr. Burnett-Zeigler offers clinical insights including coping strategies for living a mentally and physically well and joyous life—and how all Black women can uncover their authentic, vulnerable strength within.

It is now available on Amazon.com https://amzn.to/3ydadOj

Inger Burnett-Ziegler, PhD is a licensed clinical psychologist and associate professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. Thank you for my advance copy and all that you are doing to help heal our community.

“Black women give and give and give to the point of emotional exhaustion. Nobody Knows the Trouble I’ve Seen let’s us know how to break this unhealthy cycle by learning self-forgiveness, which through God’s help leads to self-love and the power to say, ‘No, I come first in my life’”
-Mary J. Blige

“Patience, courage and perseverance are required in taking good care of yourself. You are worthy. You are important. Your song is part of a great symphony! Nobody Knows the Trouble I’ve Seen will help you find your instrument and melody.”
-Jenifer Lewis,
Author of The Mother of Black Hollywood

I’m teaming with some amazing docs these next few weeks. Join Dr. Tang () and I tomorrow at 7 pm on IG Live as we get into this Britney Spears case.

・・・
I've been extremely disturbed by the details of the Britney Spears conservatorship case, as I'm sure many of you have been.

I'm a Gynecologist that advocates for reproductive rights, and my husband is an ethicist. Many of my patients have mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, even history of suicidal thoughts. I've never in 16 years of being a Gynecologist, had a patient in such a strict legal conservatorship, unless they were extremely mentally impaired.

I was especially shocked about her comment that she was being forced to keep an IUD that she no longer wanted, to prevent her for trying to conceive against her wishes - and that she wasn't allowed to even make a doctor's appointment to discuss this. That is extraordinarily unusual.

While we don't know the specifics of her case, this is a woman who was remembering and performing very complex choreography and keeping up work responsibilities for a Las Vegas show every night.

Her case raises serious issues about bodily autonomy, reproductive rights, and mental health.

To discuss these issues, my friend and extraordinary Psychiatrist, author, and professor of Psychiatry and I will be doing an Instagram Live tomorrow, Sunday at 7P EST. Please join us. ❤ This case is about justice for an individual woman who has faced extreme abuses and deserves a chance to get her life back. But also about broader health rights issues that affect us all.

There has been a surge in children needing mental health treatment since the pandemic began. Children are experiencing crippling anxiety, eating disorder symptoms, thoughts of su***de and compulsive behaviors all for the very first time. Parents are scrambling to find support for their children with some even facing the tough decision of needing psychiatric hospitalization.

This quickly becomes a family crisis as parents instantly feel the anxiety of seeing their children in this state. Loss of routine, isolation from friends and losing family members to covid-19 are just a few of the contributors to the rise in children’s psychiatric symptoms. I also have started seeing adolescents as we’re all working together the to treat the pandemic’s aftermath.

As we resume some type of normal outside, let’s keep close eyes on the young ones. As the article states, “Young people are resilient, but they are vulnerable”

We need to avoid thinking children will recover from the past year without mental health support. Young people are resilient, but they are vulnerable.
