💛 MEET THE DOULAS | Introducing Mekeisha

Our series continues with Mekeisha, a wife, mother of four, grandmother, birth worker, and lactation counselor whose heart is centered on supporting families.

With years of experience in WIC and maternal health services, Mekeisha helps parents feel comfortable asking questions, expressing their wishes, and knowing someone is in their corner.

Through her practice, Tiny Hands Birth Co., she brings compassionate care, hands-on support, and evidence-based education to the birth journey. We’re excited to introduce her to our Rise & Radiate community!

Her guiding belief: meet families where they are and help them approach birth with confidence rather than fear.

✨ Join us in welcoming Mekeisha!

C-Sections Aren’t the Only Way

A C-section can be lifesaving when it is medically needed. But it should not automatically be treated as the expected way to give birth.

One of the best things you can do during pregnancy is learn your options, ask questions, and build a strong birth support team.

A doula does not replace your doctor or nurse. A doula stays with you, helps you understand your choices, supports comfort and movement during labor, and helps you communicate what matters to you. Research on continuous labor support has found that this kind of support is associated with a lower likelihood of cesarean birth.

At Rise & Radiate Maternal Collective, we want mothers to walk into birth informed, supported, and confident.

You deserve information. You deserve support. You deserve a voice in your birth.

😩😩‼️‼️

😩😩‼️‼️

We know that at the root of some of our poor outcomes is disparities in care. Sadly, a study showing Black mothers are more likely to receive unnecessary c-sections when compared to their peers, did not surprise us.

Why are we not surprised? Part of our training and at the core of our organization is being aware of disparities in care and the importance of diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Our curriculum includes information and history about how these disparities came to be, and how birth workers can be support their clients in reducing individual risks. We already suspected this type of care.

Let us be clear: the issue is very much systemic, and doulas are not the solution to the problem. However, with training and education, our doulas can help their clients navigate the unfair biases in care which can exist.

The large study of nearly 1 million births at 68 hospitals in New Jersey, researchers found that obstetricians are more likely to perform unnecessary C-sections on Black mothers when compared to white mothers. Shockingly, Black women were 25% more likely to give birth via a c-section.

When we consider that Black women are 3-4 times more likely to die from pregnancy and childbirth related complications, we have to wonder, what impact is unnecessary surgery having on those numbers?

"WHY does my baby always want to nurse at night?!" 😩

Listen, it can be tiring...we get it! But, it's biologically normal for infants to feed at night. The problem isn't baby, or biology, it's simply that many aspects of modern culture don't support this need among moms and babies.

We unfortunately can't change the lack of support, but understanding why baby is up to feed, again, can help us navigate feeling like we're parenting "wrong" or there's something wrong with baby.

Babies feed at night because:

✨️ Milk supply regulation can depend on it
✨️ It's normal infant biology
✨️ Comfort and regulation
✨️ Growth and developmental spurts, babies simply can't always consume the engery needed only during daytime hours
✨️ They have small stomachs that fill and empty rather quickly
✨️ Connection and safety

And remember, this doesn't last forever. Young babies have different needs than toddlers and children.

👇🏽 Do you struggle with nighttime feeds?
