As summer begins to wrap up, the Texas heat persists. The National Weather Service has issued an Extreme Heat Warning for North Texas and a Heat Advisory remains active across Central Texas. But it doesn’t take a scorching hot day for a child to be in danger.

Young children are particularly at risk as their bodies heat up three to five times faster than an adult’s. Because of this, and because cars heat up so quickly – 19 degrees in 10 minutes – hot car tragedies can happen faster than you think.

In 2026 so far, there have been two Pediatric Vehicular Heatstroke (PVH) deaths in Texas and 23 in the nation.

To ensure the community stays safe as the heat continues, Cook Children's is urging families to stay informed.

To reduce the number of child vehicular heatstroke deaths, parents should remember to ACT:
• A: AVOID heatstroke and other heat-related injuries by never leaving your child alone in a car, not even for a minute. When the vehicle is at home, keep the doors locked and keys or key fobs out of a child's reach.
• C: CREATE reminders. Place an item you need in the back of your car or next to your child, such as a bag, wallet or cellphone. This is especially important if you're not following your normal routine. If your child is with a care provider, ensure vehicle-related procedures are in place, such as vehicle searches or locking vehicles when not in use. Use technology to your advantage and use apps or other communication methods with your childcare provider.
• T: TAKE action. If you see a child alone in a car, call 9-1-1. Emergency personnel want you to call, and they are trained to respond swiftly to these situations. One call could save a life.

Back-to-school shopping is important, but there’s something even more critical to focus on this school year: sleep. According to Cook Children's pediatrician, Diane Arnaout, M.D., a well-rested child is more likely to manage emotions, focus and absorb information throughout the day.

In the first episode of For Kids' Sake, Dr. Arnaout shares practical advice to help families navigate the transition from summer break to the classroom.

From resetting sleep schedules and easing first-day anxiety to understanding school vaccines and preparing for cold and flu season, this episode covers the essentials every parent and caregiver should know before the school bell rings.
