When is a child old enough to stay home alone?
As summer break begins, many parents are faced with an important question: Can my child stay home alone?
In New York State, there is no specific legal age that determines when a child can be left home alone. Instead, parents and caregivers are encouraged to consider factors like their child’s maturity, ability to follow rules, problem-solving skills, and how they would respond in an emergency.
Before leaving your child home alone, ask yourself:
Do they know how to contact a trusted adult?
Can they call 911 if needed?
Do they understand basic safety rules?
Are they comfortable being home alone?
Every child develops differently, and what works for your family may not work for another. Taking time to prepare your child for independence can help keep them safe and confident.
