Hearing Professionals of Alabama is an Audiology Private Practice founded by Beth Hoven, Au.D. Beth and Allison both received their Doctorate of Audiology from Auburn University. The two spent time working together at a local ENT in Montgomery, Alabama from 2010 - 2013. In Summer 2013, Allison left to pursue her dream of working full time with Pediatrics in Birmingham, Alabama. Beth remained at th

e ENT, and she continued to function as the Director of Audiology Services. In March of 2014 a little dream was born. Beth and Allison had often talked about what it would be like to own their own practice, but it wasn't until Allison's 18 month old son was diagnosed with hearing loss that this idea started to come to life. This was devastating for Allison and her family; however, they now realize this was a blessing in disguise. Along with a diagnosis of hearing loss comes the need for numerous appointments with the child's Audiologist and Auditory Verbal Therapist. Beth and Allison quickly realized just how much Central and East Alabama needed a place close to home to seek both of the above professionals. There are countless families who drive several hours, as often as every 2 months, for their Audiology services. On top of this, these families are also driving distances in order to get speech therapy from a trained Auditory Verbal Therapist. This was the final push they needed to pursue the adventure of opening their own practice. Hearing Professionals of Alabama will provide hearing healthcare services to both the Adult and Pediatric Population. There is no one they won't see! They will offer diagnostic audiology, hearing aid consultations, hearing aid fittings, Tinnitus Evaluations/Management, Auditory Brainstem Response testing, Auditory Processing Disorder testing, and hearing conservation services. In addition, they will be available to make swim plugs, musicians plugs, shooters plugs, etc.. Beth and Allison are passionate about providing quality Audiology services with a smile. Hearing is such an important part of life without which communication with loved ones becomes difficult. Hearing Professionals of Alabama hopes to help provide everyone with the opportunity to be, and hear, their best!

Quick question for our community. 👋

When was the last time you had your hearing checked?

Not because something felt wrong. Just as a baseline. The way you would with your eyes, your blood pressure, or your cholesterol.

Most adults have never had a hearing evaluation, and most of the ones who have are overdue for a follow-up. Hearing changes gradually enough that it is easy to miss year over year, which is exactly why an annual check matters.

It takes less than an hour. It is completely painless. And it gives you a clear picture of where your hearing stands right now, so that if anything changes down the road, you have something to compare it to.

September is one of the best times to get it on the calendar. Before the holidays fill everything up. Before year-end gets busy. While there is still room to actually follow through! 🤩

If the answer to "when was the last time" is "I cannot remember," that’s a good sign it is time. 👂

If you play pickleball, or know someone who does, this one is worth reading! 🎾

Pickleball is now one of the fastest-growing sports in the country, with nearly 20 million players in the US. And this year, hearing health officially showed up on the court.

Phonak recently partnered with USA Pickleball to launch a nationwide campaign bringing hearing health education directly to players and fans at tournaments across the country. The idea is straightforward: pickleball is built on communication, quick reactions, and staying connected to your partner and the game. 🙏

All of that depends on hearing more than most players realize.

Indoor pickleball facilities in particular are notoriously loud environments. Hard floors, high ceilings, the constant pop of the ball. For someone with untreated hearing loss, those environments can be genuinely exhausting, and the game stops being fun.

If hearing has been making the court feel harder than it should, that is worth looking into before the season winds down.

One of the things patients say that never gets old… 👇

"I forgot I was wearing them."

That is the goal. Not just better hearing, hearing that disappears into your life so completely that you stop thinking about the devices and start just living. 🥰

Getting there requires more than picking the right technology. It requires someone who knows how to program it specifically for your ears, your hearing test results, and the actual environments you spend time in.

The difference between a hearing aid that sits in a drawer and one that someone wears every single day is almost never the device. It is the fitting. 🤯

If you have tried hearing aids before and they did not feel right, that is worth talking about. And if you are considering them for the first time, starting with a full evaluation gives us the information we need to get it right from the beginning.

The FDA created a list of eight symptoms that mean you should skip OTC hearing aids completely and see an audiologist or ENT immediately:

Here they are:

🚩 Fluid, pus, or blood draining from your ear in the past 6 months
🚩 Sudden or rapidly progressing hearing loss
🚩 Hearing loss that is noticeably worse in only one ear
🚩 Ringing or buzzing in only one ear
🚩 Chronic dizziness or severe vertigo
🚩 Pain or discomfort in the ear
🚩 A visible deformity of the ear
🚩 A feeling that your ear is completely plugged

If any of these apply to you or someone you love, an OTC device is not the answer. These are signs that something medical may be happening, and putting a hearing aid in without knowing why could delay the care that actually matters.

Did you know most hearing aids come with a free app? 📲

While some patients love it, some never use it.

Which is completely understandable, as the devices themselves adjust on their own.

But here is what it actually does: 👉 it lets you adjust the volume, switch between listening programs, and in some cases activate a remote microphone feature, all from your phone, without touching your ears or drawing any attention to yourself.

The one I suggest starting with is the volume control. 📶 That’s it. Just that one feature, for the first few weeks. Once it feels natural, everything else is easier to explore.

If you downloaded the app when you got your devices and never looked at it again, it might be worth a second look. And if you are not sure where to start, that is exactly what follow-up appointments are for!

Did you know the FDA recognizes two completely different categories of hearing aids?

Most people don't. And it's one of the most important things to understand before you or someone you love makes a decision about their hearing!

Over-the-counter hearing aids became legal in 2022. You can now walk into a pharmacy or order online without ever seeing a doctor. For the right person, that accessibility is genuinely helpful.

👉 But here is what most people miss…

OTC hearing aids are strictly regulated for adults 18 and older with perceived mild to moderate hearing loss only. They are not designed for children. They are not designed for severe or profound hearing loss. And they are not a substitute for a clinical evaluation.

Prescription hearing aids are different. They are fitted and programmed by a licensed audiologist based on your exact hearing test results, and they cover all ages and all levels of hearing loss, from mild to profound. ✨

Same name. Very different product. Very different purpose.

One of the biggest reasons people put off trying hearing aids is the fear of committing to something they are not sure about.

What if they do not work the way I hoped?

What if I spend all that money and it is not the right fit?

What if I get home and it just does not feel right?

Those are fair questions. And at Hearing Professionals of Alabama, we think you deserve real answers.

So here is how we handle it.

Every patient who starts with new hearing technology at our practice has [30 or 45] days to wear them in their real life. If at the end of that time something is not working the way you need it to, we fix it. And if it is still not right, you can return them.

No pressure, no penalty, no awkward conversation.

This time of year feels like a natural reset, a little more structure coming back into daily life. If you’ve been thinking about doing something about your hearing, this is a great time.

Something I want families to understand, because it changes everything…

When your parent goes quiet at a crowded dinner table, they are not being antisocial.

When they laugh along with a story they clearly didn't follow, they are not being dismissive.

When they ask you to repeat yourself, they are not being annoying.

When they wave you off and say they’re fine, they might actually be exhausted.

Hearing loss doesn't feel the way most people expect it to from the outside. It isn't silence. It's an effort. Constant, invisible, exhausting effort. Just trying to follow a conversation in a loud restaurant can feel like you’re running a race no one else knows is happening.

It's laughing at the right moment because you caught a word or two and made your best guess, and praying nobody asks you to weigh in.

It's slowly, quietly, starting to prefer smaller gatherings. Shorter phone calls. Fewer situations where you might get it wrong.

When you understand what your parent is actually navigating, the conversation becomes less about convincing them of something and more about letting them know you see them.
