This one stopped me for a minute.
Kim has been one of our mentor clients for several years, which means she doesn’t just meet our students at the end, when they’re polished and ready to graduate. She experiences their work throughout their education — and as a longtime massage therapist herself, she knows what she’s feeling.
Building this school has been an enormous labor of love, and I care deeply about the kind of therapists we send out into our community. To have someone I respect reflect this back to us means more than I can say.
Thank you, Kim, for supporting our students, giving them your honest feedback, and being part of their education. ❤️

Since January, we have been building something, one practice at a time: clearing the mind, aligning thought and action, acting with courage, staying the course with patience, softening through mercy, widening the heart through magnanimity, and becoming more real through sincerity.

This month, we enter the practice of Pure Love.

Not love as performance. Not love that overextends, keeps score, or waits to be repaid.

The kind of love we are practicing is clear. It has boundaries. It tells the truth. It remembers that every person is carrying something unseen.

As Swami Sivananda taught, love is not merely a feeling; it is something we practice through kindness, service, and how we meet one another.

You can read the full August teaching, Pure Love: Love Freely, Without Expectation, in our Satsangha Library;

A new path into massage therapy begins this September.

Downtown Yoga & Healing Arts is welcoming the inaugural class of our 500-Hour Massage Therapy Day Program—designed for students who are ready for a structured daytime education and a clear path toward Maine massage therapy licensure.

Classes meet Tuesdays and Thursdays, 8:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m., beginning September 8, 2026. This nine-month program is hands-on, mentor-led, and built for students who want meaningful professional training without needing to make an evening/weekend schedule work.

Students may also choose to expand their education with Foot Reflexology certification.

DTY offers several professional pathways in massage therapy and reflexology; if you are considering a new career but are unsure which path fits your life, let’s talk it through.

Send us a message to schedule a school tour or admissions conversation. We’ll help you understand the program, the schedule, and your next step.

Happy Guru Pūrṇimā. 🙏🏼✨
Today, under the full moon, we honor the guru—not simply a person, but the sacred lineage of wisdom that has been lovingly preserved and passed from teacher to student for thousands of years.
Guru Pūrṇimā is a day of deep gratitude. We pause to acknowledge all those who have illuminated our path, challenged us to grow, and reminded us of who we truly are.
In the yogic tradition, the greatest offering we can give our teacher is not flowers, gifts, or praise.
It is our practice.
The Taittirīya Upaniṣad reminds us that the gift most pleasing to a teacher is the one that reflects what they truly value. And what a true teacher values is not perfection, but sincere, steady practice. Swami Sivananda often reminded us:
“An ounce of practice is worth tons of theory.”
Every time we sit for meditation...
Every mantra we chant...
Every act of selfless service...
Every moment we choose truth over habit...
We honor the lineage.
One of the most beautiful practices Swami Sivananda encouraged was keeping a Spiritual Diary—a simple daily reflection that helps cultivate self-awareness, discipline, and steady progress on the path. It isn’t about judgment; it’s about living with greater intention and remembering what truly matters.
If you’ve ever felt called to deepen your spiritual practice, Guru Pūrṇimā is a beautiful day to begin.
If you’re interested in learning more about the Spiritual Diary and how to start one, send me a DM. I’d be honored to share this practice with you.
May we continue to practice with humility, devotion, and gratitude. Continued in comments 🙏

Some stories deserve to be shared.

Kim has been showing up for Monday morning yoga with Izzy for five years. In all that time, she says she’s missed fewer than five classes.

Because she found a practice—and a community—that became part of her healing journey.

At DTY we hope every class leaves someone feeling a little better than when they walked through the door. We never take for granted when someone chooses to return, week after week, year after year.

Kim, thank you for trusting us with your practice.

This is the heart of Downtown Yoga.

One of the most common misconceptions in modern yoga is that Haṭha Yoga is simply a style of yoga.

Traditionally, it is not.

Haṭha Yoga is a complete system of practice preserved in the classical Haṭha Yoga texts. It includes āsana (postures), prāṇāyāma (breath practices), relaxation, concentration, meditation, and the disciplines that prepare the practitioner for deeper self-understanding.

The physical postures are only one part of the practice. They were never intended to stand alone.

When we begin to understand Haṭha Yoga as a complete system, our relationship with practice changes. Yoga becomes more than movement—it becomes a path of cultivating steadiness, clarity, and ultimately, freedom.

This is the tradition we continue to study, practice, and share at Downtown Yoga & Healing Arts.
