The oxygen monitor on your finger can miss dangerously low oxygen in patients with darker skin.
In March 2026, the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME), the body that accredits every U.S. medical school, removed the explicit requirement that students learn about health care disparities, replacing it with generic “self-directed learning” language.
It’s part of a broader pattern: as medical education gets pulled into partisan fights, the first thing to go is often the evidence about who medicine has failed.
This week, Congress held a hearing on medical education. I kept waiting to hear about the actual clinical evidence: the pulse oximeter, the kidney equation, the lung test. It never came.
Teaching doctors where medicine has failed patients isn’t activism. It’s medicine.
A pulse oximeter has no ideology. A kidney equation has no agenda.
I’ve partnered with Change.org to ask the LCME to restore this requirement. There’s still time to reverse it before 2027
