🌿 REST AS RESISTANCE 🌿

Friday is here, and it’s time to unplug.

Doing the heavy work of systemic advocacy and navigating daily life takes a real toll on our nervous systems. Rest isn't a reward for a job well done; it’s a necessary part of the of survival.

Close the tabs, put down the phone, and let your mind drift. Guard your peace this weekend. You’ve more than earned it.

TERMS OF THE TRADE THURSDAY

Today’s term is: Systems Advocacy.

🔍 What it means: Action taken to change the policies, rules, laws, or structures of institutions that impact large groups of people, rather than just helping one individual at a time.

🤔 Why it matters: Helping a peer navigate a barrier is vital individual support. But Systems Advocacy is about looking at why that barrier exists in the first place and working to dismantle it for everyone. It’s shifting the focus from fixing the person to fixing the system.

Thanks to Spurwink Services for showing this powerful movie next week and talking about a collective goal so many of our partners are as well to end homelessness! Movie is next Thursday and is free. See details below!

Spurwink is proud to offer a special viewing and panel discussion of Building Hope: Ending Homelessness in Maine, alongside the City of Auburn.

Directed by Richard Kane and produced by Melody Lewis-Kane, the film shines a compassionate light on the realities of Maine’s homelessness crisis. Through deeply personal stories, Building Hope explores the challenges faced by unhoused individuals and families, while highlighting the hope that emerges when communities come together to create solutions.

As our local councils dive deep into discussing Crisis Response Services this month, we ground ourselves in the actual experiences of the people who rely on these systems.

Here is what a peer shared about what truly makes a difference during a mental health crisis:

"In a crisis, a badge and a gun don't feel like help, they just feel terrifying. I don't need an authority figure with a checklist. I just need a human being willing to sit in the mud with me and remind me I'm going to survive this." — Anonymous Peer

We are bringing these vital perspectives straight to the state level to advocate for crisis services rooted in empathy, dignity, and peer-informed care.

Ever wonder how your thoughts at a local meeting actually make a difference? Let’s look at the pipeline!

Right now, our Local Councils are having robust, honest conversations about Crisis Response Services in Maine. But it doesn't stop there.

1️⃣ Local Councils share raw feedback and ideas.
2️⃣ This feedback is gathered and sent to our Issues Subcommittee.
3️⃣ The subcommittee refines these points into formal policy recommendations.
4️⃣ The final document is sent directly to the State for review.

When you speak up at a council meeting, the state hears you. Find your local council info at 🌐 maineccsm.org and pull up a chair!

Today is Primary Election Day in Maine!
Voting is one of the most direct ways to ensure that the issues impacting peers and mental health care in our state are being heard by those in office.
Whether it’s housing, crisis response, or peer-led recovery services, our collective voice is stronger when we show up.
If you are an unenrolled voter (independent), you can still participate in a party primary, just ask for the ballot of your choice at your polling place! Let’s keep advocating for a recovery-oriented system of care. Make a plan, head to the polls, and make your voice count today!

Seeking help for your mental health is a courageous step, but what happens when the system puts up a wall?

Long waitlists, confusing insurance networks, high deductibles, and a lack of local providers are systemic barriers, not individual failures. When someone has to wait months for an appointment or choose between a co-pay and groceries, the system is failing them.

Shifting the big picture means advocating for accessible, affordable, and timely care that meets people where they are, without the roadblocks.

Happy Friday, peers! Take a deep breath, let your shoulders drop, and unpack the weight of the week.

It just so happens that today is National Donut Day 🍩, which fits perfectly into our Friday vibe. In a world that often ties our worth to rigid health standards, constant productivity, or "earning" our rewards, choosing to simply enjoy a sweet treat without guilt is its own subtle act of defiance.

Today, we invite you to pair your morning coffee or tea with something that brings you pure, simple joy. No expectations, no overthinking just a quiet moment of comfort.

Grab a donut, slow down, and guard your peace today. You deserve it.

TERMS OF THE TRADE THURSDAY

Today we are looking at a term that has deeply shaped the landscape of mental health care, both historically and in the present day: Institutionalization.

🔍 What it means: The process of placing individuals into large, segregated institutional settings (like traditional asylums or psychiatric hospitals) for long periods, often removing them from their communities, families, and daily social life.

🤔 Why it matters: Understanding institutionalization helps us see why the fight for deinstitutionalization and robust community-based peer resources is so critical. True recovery and thriving happen when individuals are integrated into supportive communities, not isolated from them. 🌲🏡
