I was not prepared for the response after sharing the news of Dr. Abdullah Kutlar’s passing.
The grief has been palpable — and it extends far beyond Georgia’s patient community.
Patients have shared that they drove hours just to be under his care. Colleagues have described him as a mentor, collaborator, role model, teacher, scientist, advocate, and friend. Across the sickle cell ecosystem, people have reflected on his kindness, humility, wisdom, and the tremendous influence he had on their work and lives.
What has become so clear is that Dr. Kutlar’s impact cannot be measured by one title or one institution.
He cared for patients.
He mentored professionals.
He advanced research.
He helped shape the field.
And through it all, he remained deeply human.
For adult warriors across Georgia and neighboring states, this loss is deeply personal. For physicians, researchers, nurses, colleagues, and collaborators, it is the loss of a respected leader and friend. For the broader sickle cell community, we have lost someone whose life’s work helped move all of us forward.
Because of the extraordinary outpouring of love and gratitude, the MTS Sickle Cell Foundation is adding a special tribute to Dr. Kutlar to our Sickle Cell Awareness Month billboard campaign on I-75 Northbound near Exit 233, Morrow/Lake City.
THANK YOU, DR. KUTLAR.
YOUR CARE CHANGED LIVES.
This tribute is small compared with all he gave, but it reflects what we are hearing from every corner of this community:
You mattered to your patients.
You mattered to your colleagues.
You mattered to science.
You mattered to this community.
Your legacy will endure. ❤️
