POV: You’re supporting someone through labor.

Contraction… 😮‍💨
Contraction… 😮‍💨
“SQUEEEEEEZE!!!” 😂

If you don’t know what I’m talking about yet, let me introduce you to the double hip squeeze.

This is one of my favorite comfort measures to teach because, when it’s done correctly, it can be a game changer during labor. It provides firm counterpressure to the pelvis, helping relieve pressure during contractions and making labor feel much more manageable for many moms.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve gotten the call because someone’s support person was trying, but just wasn’t quite getting it. 😂

The good news? It’s simple, it’s evidence-based, and almost any support person can learn it.

If you’ve experienced a good double hip squeeze, you already know. 😂

And if you’re pregnant, add this to your birth prep. Practice it before labor. Game changer. 🙌🏾😆

A mom recently shared with me why having a doula mattered so much to her.

She said, “I didn’t have to do it all.”

She knew her daughter was being cared for, so she didn’t feel responsible for every detail in the room. She got to be fully present as her mom.

No matter how old we get, there are moments when we just need our mom. Not because she’s going to fix it, but because her presence brings a kind of comfort that no one else can.

While I’m focused on supporting labor, her mom gets to hold her hand, encourage her, pray with her, cry with her, and simply respond when she hears, “Mommy… I need you.”

I’m the same way with my own mom. There are moments when I don’t need her to have the answers. I just need her.

That’s one of the things I love most about being a doula. I get to create space for every support person to show up in the way only they can. Whether it’s a mom, best friend, aunt, brother, sister, or partner, their presence matters too. I love helping them feel confident in their role so they can be fully present for someone they love.🤎🤎

I never know exactly what a birth will ask of me, but I always pray that I’m able to meet each family where they are and provide the support they need in that moment. Whether that’s words of encouragement, advocacy, hands-on comfort measures, or even hip squeezes while they’re having contractions on the toilet.

To receive a message like this only hours after welcoming their sweet baby into the world is something I’ll never take for granted.

Thank you, Lessie, for trusting me with one of the most important days of your life. It was an honor to support you and Franklin as you welcomed your baby boy into the world. 🤎

Most people know me as a birth and postpartum doula(or mom or wifey lol) but Monday through Friday I work in Talent & Organizational Effectiveness.

On paper, these careers couldn’t look more different.

In my corporate role, I partner with leaders to develop talent, navigate change, and influence the behaviors that drive stronger teams and better business results. I don’t solve the challenges for them. I help equip them with the tools, perspective, and confidence to lead through them and own the outcomes.

As a doula, my approach is the same.

I don’t birth the baby for my clients or make decisions on their behalf. I partner with families, provide evidence-based information, ask thoughtful questions, and help them build the confidence to advocate for themselves and make informed decisions that align with what’s right for them.

Different environments. Different outcomes.

The approach never changes.

I believe the best partnerships don’t take ownership away from people. They help people step into it.

Whether it’s a leader navigating change or a family welcoming a new baby, my goal is the same: to leave people feeling more confident, more capable, and more empowered than when we started.

Turns out, I didn’t choose two different careers after all. I just found two different ways to live out the same purpose. 😊

This birth reminded me why doulas matter.

Recently, I supported a family whose birth plans changed unexpectedly. As they navigated a difficult decision, my role wasn’t to make the decision for them or influence the outcome. My role was to ensure they felt informed, supported, and confident in whatever path they chose.

After the birth, the physician sought me out personally and thanked me for the way I supported the family through that process.

Then mom shared that despite how different things looked from what she originally envisioned, she wouldn’t have wanted it to go any other way.

That is what doula support is all about.

Not ensuring birth goes according to plan, but helping families feel seen, heard, and supported when the plan changes.

Some of the most meaningful support happens in those moments between receiving information and making a decision. When families have the space to process, ask questions, and move forward with confidence, they are often able to look back on their birth experience with peace.

This experience was a beautiful reminder of what can happen when families, providers, and doulas work together with the same goal: supporting mom and baby. 🤎

This season has been full, and I’m choosing to be intentional about how I care for myself so I can continue showing up fully.

Taking this month to slow down, reset, and return to the things that keep me grounded.

More good days, together 🤎
