The love just keeps pouring week-after-week. Thanks "L" for this message, "I've avoided therapy for years because medical offices make my anxiety worse, not better. That sterile, rushed, "you're just another appointment" vibe? I can't do it. When I finally called Axis Integrated Mental Health in Denver, I was honest about this concern during scheduling. They got it. The office space in their Denver location feels more like a thoughtfully designed living room than a clinic. My psychiatrist spends real time with me - not 15-minute med checks where I barely get two sentences in. We're also finally dialing in my medications after years of "let's try this and see" at other practices. If you're in Denver or Boulder and the thought of cold, impersonal psychiatric appointments has kept you from getting help, Axis does something fundamentally different with their environment and approach. It's the difference between dreading appointments and actually showing up consistently."

Depression doesn't always look like sadness.

Sometimes it looks like someone who wakes up, goes to work, cracks jokes, and gets through the day, only to crash the moment no one is watching.

It's functional exhaustion. A freshly painted house with cracked foundations. A car running on fumes.

In Colorado, 266,000 adults experience serious thoughts of su***de every year. That's the equivalent of the populations of Boulder and Lakewood combined.

Signs someone you love might be struggling:

- They seem "fine" but are always exhausted
- They've lost interest in things they once loved
- They're more irritable than usual over small things
- They use humor as a mask—jokes with a little too much edge
- They overcompensate by staying busy to avoid sitting with their thoughts
- Their eating habits have changed
- They avoid talking about themselves and deflect with "I'm fine"

If someone checks multiple boxes, it might be time to have a conversation.

How to start the conversation:

- Pick the right time and place, somewhere private where they feel comfortable. Use gentle observations instead of accusations: "I've noticed you've been really exhausted lately. I just want to check in."

- Ask open-ended questions. Listen without judgment. Offer support without pressure: "I care about you, and I'm here if you ever want to talk."

When to take immediate action:
- If someone talks about wanting to die, expresses hopelessness, or starts giving away possessions, it's time to act. Ask directly: "Are you thinking about hurting yourself?"
- Don't leave them alone. Call 988 or take them to the nearest ER.
- Asking won't plant the idea, it opens the door for connection and support.

More than 530,000 people in Colorado are suffering with depression. This staggering number is a huge part of why our state ranks 50th, second to last, for the prevalence of mental illness.

This is the "why" behind the "Colorado Paradox." We have the providers (ranked #10), but they are completely overwhelmed by the sheer number of people who need help.

This is why we can't just keep doing what we're doing. It's why we're expanding. It's why we acquired BestMind. It's why we champion new, innovative treatments. We are on a mission to build a system that can actually handle the scale of this problem.

There is a special kind of despair called "Treatment-Resistant Depression." It’s for the person who has tried. And tried. And tried. You've been on every SSRI. You've done the therapy. And nothing. Works. You don't just feel sad anymore; you feel broken. You feel like you've lost hope.

Elinor O'Buckley has been on your side of the conversation.

She has lived through Treatment-Resistant Depression herself. She knows, personally, what it means to lose hope and what it takes to rebuild it, brick by painful brick.

Her "lived experience" makes her one of the most compassionate, validating providers you will ever meet. She’s not just a clinician; she’s a survivor. She combines her clinical expertise in depression and trauma with a deep understanding of mindfulness and movement-based therapy. She’s here to sit with you in the dark and then, together, find the light.

If you’ve lost hope, please talk to someone who has found it again.

When someone you love is struggling with depression, it can leave you feeling helpless, overwhelmed, and unsure of what to do.

You might notice the signs before they do. Research shows that family members often recognize symptoms of depression earlier than the person experiencing it.

Caregiver involvement leads to faster intervention, better treatment outcomes, and reduced relapse risk.
But knowing what to do next is hard. What if you say the wrong thing? What if they shut down? What if nothing you do helps?

Practical ways to help:
Do:
- Listen without judgment
- Offer help with small daily tasks
- Encourage them to attend appointments
- Learn about their treatment plan

Don't:
- Say "snap out of it"
- Try to fix everything yourself
- Blame yourself for their condition
- Ignore signs of worsening symptoms

When to seek professional help:
You don't have to wait until things get worse. Seek help if your loved one mentions hopelessness or su***de, withdraws from daily life, stops engaging in school or work, or can't get out of bed. The sooner someone gets help, the easier it is to recover.
Caregiver depression is real:

Imagine walking into your office and knowing that nearly 7 out of 10 people around you are struggling with workplace stress.

According to the American Psychological Association, 77% of employees experience work-related stress.

The World Health Organization estimates that 12 billion working days are lost every year to depression and anxiety, costing the global economy $1 trillion annually in lost productivity.

This isn't just a personal struggle anymore. It's a business epidemic.

Managers who know what to look for can intervene before stress escalates into burnout or worse.

Common symptoms include:

- Constant fatigue even after rest
- Increased irritability or mood swings
- Difficulty concentrating
- Sleep disturbances
- Frequent headaches or digestive issues
- Increased absenteeism
- Loss of motivation
- Withdrawing from social interactions

Words matter:
❌ "Just tough it out."
❌ "You're overreacting."
❌ "We all have stress; deal with it."
✅ "I appreciate you sharing this with me."
✅ "How can I support you?"
✅ "Your well-being is important."
✅ "Let's explore solutions together."

Conversation starters for leaders:
- "I've noticed you've been quieter than usual. Is everything okay?"
- "Work can be overwhelming. If you ever need to talk, I'm here."
- "I want you to prioritize your mental health. What would help you feel more supported?"

One of our patients left this in our inbox this morning and our hearts are so full right now. They said, "When I was researching mental health clinics in Denver for my husband, I did what everyone does - read reviews, checked credentials, called around. But here's what I learned: you can't really know until you walk in the door. At Axis Integrated Mental Health, the difference hit me immediately during that first visit. The front desk remembered our names. The intake coordinator actually listened instead of just checking boxes. Even before we met the psychiatrist, I felt like we'd made the right choice. That instinct was right - the clinical team has been exceptional, but it's the whole experience that makes Axis different from the three other practices we tried in Denver. If you're tired of shopping around and want a place where quality shows up in every interaction, this is what "best staff" actually means in practice."

Laziness is a short-term choice, usually driven by boredom or lack of interest.

Depression is a medical condition that drains your motivation, energy, and ability to think clearly, even when you want to act.

Key differences:
1. Desire to change: Laziness: Often doesn't care | Depression: Wants change but feels blocked

2. Motivational self-talk: Laziness: "I'll do it later"| Depression: "I hate that I can't start"

3. Emotional charge: Laziness: Guilt-free procrastination | Depression: Persistent guilt, shame, or worthlessness

4. Energy level: Laziness: Has energy but lacks motivation | Depression: Fatigue is overwhelming and unrelieved by rest

5. Response to rewards: Laziness: Perks up with incentives | Depression: Even exciting things feel dull

6. Impact scope: Laziness: Task-specific (e.g., avoids chores) | Depression: Broad impact across work, hygiene, socializing

Myths that obscure diagnosis:
1. "I just need more willpower"
2. "People with depression are always crying"
3. "If I can still work, I can't be depressed"
4. "If I can get out of bed, I'm fine"

Depression isn't a character flaw. It's a clinical signal. And you don't have to push through it alone.

The numbers should stop us in our tracks.

Only 42% of LGBTQ+ Coloradans report having good mental health. For transgender, nonbinary, and gender-diverse Coloradans, that drops to just 22.9%.

And for LGBTQ+ youth in Colorado, the crisis is even harder to ignore:

41% seriously considered su***de
47% of transgender and nonbinary youth considered su***de
12% attempted su***de in the past year
68% reported anxiety symptoms
56% reported depression symptoms
48% wanted mental health care but couldn’t get it

That last number should haunt us a little.

Because this isn’t about “awareness.” It’s about access. It’s about whether people can find care that is safe, affirming, respectful, and actually helpful.

At Axis, we believe LGBTQ+ mental health care should not require you to explain your identity before you can start healing. You deserve providers who listen, respect you, and take your pain seriously.

Pride is a celebration. It is also a responsibility.
