Do you have a foggy memory of what ketones are from chemistry class? For most that may be what comes to mind, but for some people with type 1 diabetes, it is key to monitor for ketones as well as blood sugar levels—detecting ketones early can help to better manage the potentially life-threatening complication of diabetic ketoacidosis. A recent article features Ludeman Center researcher, Viral Shah, MD, who presented his research at the 2026 Scientific Sessions of the American Diabetes Association. He led a new 5-step framework to help bring cutting-edge diabetes research straight to the bedside. This work looks at how continuous ketone monitoring (think real-time ketone tracking, often as part of existing technologies that already monitor glucose in real time) could power the next wave of smart, automated insulin delivery. He also discussed the future of ketone monitoring and why most elevated ketone episodes can be safely managed at home with the right education and support. Watch the video here.
