What if they know better but just can’t do better?

Just because they know what to say/do doesn’t mean they can do it in the moment… so what does that mean?

A child can be bright, articulate, curious, and academically advanced, and still struggle with friendships, group settings, and conflict.

Intelligence and social-emotional development are two different things.

Social situations pull from a completely different set of brain skills:

👀 Reading facial expressions, tone, and body language

🧠 Perspective-taking: what might someone else be feeling?

🔄 Flexibility: Can I consider another idea when mine feels right?

⏸️Pausing before reacting

❤️Staying regulated when frustrated or embarrassed

🤝 Repairing things after a disagreement

And here’s what confuses so many parents: a child can show all of these when calm and lose access to every one of them under stress.

Which is why “But you KNOW better” doesn’t land the way we hope. They probably do know. Knowing what to do and being able to reach that skill mid-meltdown
are not the same ability.

This shows up a lot with intellectually advanced children. When a child is verbally sharp and academically strong, the adults around them assume the regulation
and flexibility are equally advanced. Development doesn’t move evenly like that.
So instead of asking why your child is acting this way, try asking what demand is creating stress for them right now.

That one shift changes the whole response.

Expectations can stay right where they are. What changes is the support underneath them. 💚
