Jeremy was found unconscious outside his apartment following a suspected assault in which he suffered a traumatic brain injury with multiple brain bleeds. He required emergency surgery and prolonged hospitalization.

AT ADMISSION: Jeremy’s neurosurgery included a craniotomy to relieve pressure and placement of both a temporary tube and a permanent shunt to remove excess brain fluid. His course was complicated by aspiration pneumonia, septic shock, respiratory failure, a suspected blood clot in the lung, and multiple fractures of the cervical spine, left humerus, and hand bones.

TREATMENT AT KINDRED: After transferring to Kindred Hospital Aurora, Jeremy received interdisciplinary care from neurosurgery, pulmonology,
audiology, nutrition, wound care, and physical, occupational, and speech therapy teams. Caregivers managed his fractures, electrolyte abnormalities, and complex medical conditions while helping him improve his mobility, strength, and cognition. He progressed from requiring a tracheostomy and feeding tube to having both successfully removed. His pressure wounds healed, and his cognitive status improved.

OUTCOME: By discharge, Jeremy was awake, alert, conversational, eating by mouth, and regaining strength as he continued working toward his highest possible level of function and independence. After 221 days of treatment, he was discharged to a skilled nursing facility for continued recovery.

Darrell suffered severe injuries from a motorcycle accident at about 70 mph.

AT ADMISSION: Darrell sustained a traumatic brain injury with bleeding around the brain, spinal fractures, a pulmonary embolism, aspiration pneumonia, acute respiratory distress syndrome, acute kidney injury requiring dialysis, and respiratory failure. He needed mechanical ventilation, VV ECMO (heart-lung support), chest tubes, dialysis, transfusions, antibiotics, anticoagulation therapy, and specialty care.

TREATMENT AT KINDRED: After a transfer to Kindred Hospital Aurora, Darrell received comprehensive care, including respiratory therapy, infectious disease care, nephrology, orthopedics, neurosurgery, wound care, physical therapy, and occupational therapy. His care focused on ventilator weaning, management of spinal fractures, wound care, medication management, and rehabilitative therapy to improve strength and independence. A lung abscess was successfully treated, heart failure symptoms resolved, urinary retention resolved, cellulitis healed, and anemia stabilized.

OUTCOME: As a devoted family man, Darrell has been determined to regain his independence and return home to his loved ones. Darrell progressed from needing full ventilator support to breathing room air during the day. He was discharged home after remarkable progress during a 92-day stay.

Robert underwent a right shoulder replacement surgery. The recovery process began at home. Then, he developed weakness, urinary retention, confusion, and difficulty getting out of bed. He was transported to the emergency department five days after his surgery.

At the hospital, Robert was diagnosed with sepsis, acute renal failure, metabolic encephalopathy, acute hypoxic respiratory failure, and atrial fibrillation. His condition deteriorated, leading to multiple intubations and mechanical ventilation. During his hospitalization, he suffered a cerebellar stroke and went into cardiac arrest, requiring approximately 20 minutes of CPR before successful resuscitation. He also developed Citrobacter pneumonia, hemoptysis requiring bronchoscopy, acute kidney injury requiring CRRT dialysis, dysphagia requiring PEG tube placement, and prolonged respiratory failure.

Robert transferred to Kindred Hospital Aurora, where, upon arrival, he was still ventilator-dependent with a tracheostomy and PEG tube. A multidisciplinary team, including pulmonology, respiratory therapy, nursing, physical therapy, speech therapy, pharmacy, and dietary services, collaborated on his recovery. Key milestones included successful ventilator weaning, tracheostomy decannulation, advancement from tube feeding to oral diet, and improvement in cognitive status. Robert progressed from mechanical ventilation to breathing room air independently.

“I never imagined I’d come this far after everything I went through. The staff never gave up on me, and they helped me take one step at a time toward recovery. I’m grateful to be breathing on my own again and looking forward to getting stronger every day.”

Despite facing a life-threatening illness, prolonged ventilation, stroke, cardiac arrest, and significant physical debility, Robert remained determined. His greatest motivation was returning home and regaining his independence. He was discharged to a skilled nursing facility.

Isiah went to UC Health University of Colorado Hospital (UCH) after a severe motorcycle accident that resulted in multiple traumatic injuries, including a C1 spinal fracture, T8 spinal fracture with spinal cord transection, right hemothorax, multiple rib fractures, traumatic left tibia fracture (requiring a below-knee amputation), right femur and tibia fractures, and multiple soft tissue injuries. The spinal cord injury led to paralysis of the lower half of the body. He required emergency surgical intervention and intensive medical management, including thoracotomy with chest tube placement, cervical and thoracic spinal fusions, orthopedic fixation procedures, wound debridement, and skin grafting. He required intubation and mechanical ventilation, bronchoscopy, tracheostomy placement, and blood transfusions. Complications during his acute care stay included pulmonary embolism, respiratory failure, infections, and complex wound healing needs.

At Kindred Hospital Aurora, Isiah received multidisciplinary care from several specialty departments, including respiratory therapy, wound care, orthopedic surgery, physical and occupational therapy, and nutrition. Treatments included tracheostomy management, ventilator weaning, nutritional support through tube feeding, IV antibiotics, blood transfusions, anticoagulation therapy, and extensive wound care, including wound VAC (suction) therapy and skin graft management. Orthopedic management included external fixation, intramedullary nail placement, tendon repair, and ongoing monitoring of fracture healing. Isiah also received rehabilitation services focused on strengthening his upper body, improving mobility, and preparing for long-term recovery following his spinal cord injury and amputation. Through coordinated care and rehabilitation support, Isiah progressed medically and functionally during his recovery.

Isiah is now an online business owner. He also owns his home and is currently attending school. He is highly motivated and focused on continuing to build his future. He shared that he was especially excited about getting back to his normal life and responsibilities after his recovery. His independence, drive, and commitment to both his education and business were key factors in his recovery and rehabilitation journey.

Betty lives with her grandchildren, who all refer to her as “Nana.” She loves to cook and bake desserts. A recent fall at home caused a head injury that required the temporary removal of part of the skull to treat.

Due to multiple complications during her stay at a local hospital, Betty received a tracheostomy, mechanical ventilation, and PEG tube for nutrition. Betty required assistance for all aspects of self-care and mobility. She was unable to communicate or swallow.

Upon admission at Kindred Hospital Ocala, Betty underwent evaluations by an interdisciplinary team of dietitians, rehabilitation therapists, physicians, nurses, and respiratory therapists. The team implemented an aggressive respiratory approach, successfully weaning Betty to room air.

Physical, occupational, and speech therapy evaluations were conducted to assess Betty’s functional deficits in mobility, self-care, and speech. She worked diligently and improved in all areas.

Betty can now complete all aspects of her daily care with moderate
assistance, including taking steps with a walker. She engages in conversation with family and staff and is looking forward to returning home to her family.

“I thank everyone for helping me!” she said of the Kindred team.

Gilbert suffered a sudden respiratory arrest at home that led to cardiac arrest. Fortunately, he was resuscitated at CommonSpirit St. Anthony Hospital, where he was also intubated and placed on a ventilator, treated with IV antibiotics for pneumonia and other infections, and received a feeding tube.

After about three weeks in the ICU, Gilbert, still critically ill, was transferred to Kindred Hospital Aurora for specialized respiratory care. The Kindred team focused on weaning him from the ventilator, treating infections, managing his chronic lung conditions, controlling pain from rib fractures caused by CPR, and improving his strength. Over time, his infections improved, his mental status recovered, and he increased his tolerance for tube feedings. He progressed to using a trach collar during the day and only needed ventilator support at night. His overall condition stabilized, showing meaningful recovery after a life-threatening event, and after a 97-day stay, he was transferred to an acute inpatient rehabilitation facility.

Now Gilbert is looking forward to returning to his community of
close friends.

“I would not have been able to make this great progress and move forward in my health without the help of the incredible staff here at Kindred," he said. "Their care, support, and encouragement made a huge difference in my recovery.”

Charles had a normal, active life until, years ago, he was unexpectedly assaulted at a bus stop. He sustained a cervical spine injury secondary to the assault, resulting in paraplegia. More recently, he developed complications related to a right foot wound with a history of osteomyelitis and prior fifth toe amputation.

Charles presented to University Hospital for wound concerns. There, he was evaluated after his wound VAC became dislodged. The wound VAC was not continued, and he was stabilized and monitored prior to transfer. Charles, who was a Kindred Hospital Aurora patient 10 years prior, had such positive feelings about Kindred’s staff and quality of care that he chose to return there when he needed additional support.

Kindred’s wound care team closely monitored Charles’ ailing right foot and made regular dressing changes. His care plan also included pain management, blood pressure monitoring, treatment for muscle spasms related to paraplegia, and blood clot prevention. Lab work was monitored to address mild anemia and assess for diabetes concerns.

Charles’s prior experience at Kindred contributed to his trust in the interdisciplinary team and his willingness to actively participate in treatment, reflecting the lasting impact of quality, patient-centered care. Follow-up plans include ongoing wound care, chronic condition monitoring, and supportive services.

Family is very important to Charles, and he is especially excited to return home and spend time with the 17 grandchildren he missed greatly during his recovery. He also looks forward to resuming his favorite activities - including cooking, which he proudly says he is very good at, and spoiling his grandchildren.
