If you were in the Chicagoland area during yesterday’s heavy wildfire smoke, even if your dog was only outside for quick potty breaks, consider giving them a little extra support over the next several days.
💧 Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate!
Fresh water helps keep the airways moist and supports the body’s normal elimination processes.
🚿 Thoroughly rinse or bathe
Fine smoke particles settle on the skin, paws, and coat, where they’re often ingested during grooming.
🌿 Support antioxidant and liver function.
Supplements such as milk thistle, NAC, glutathione, and TUDCA are commonly used to help support the body’s natural response to oxidative stress.
🌎 Support the body’s natural detox pathways.
Humic and fulvic acids are popular options and may help support overall detoxification and gut health.
🍄 Support the respiratory system.
Medicinal mushrooms can be a helpful addition. I like MycoDog Breathe for respiratory support.
🧬 Glycine.
The timber burning is heavily treated with glyphosate. Glyphosate mimics glycine in the body. There is ongoing research exploring potential interactions between glyphosate and glycine-dependent pathways. While the science is still evolving, it’s one of the nutrients I consider after exposures.
🌬️ Clean the air they breathe.
If you don’t already have a quality air purifier in your home, it’s one of the best investments you can make for future smoke events. I personally love my IQAir units for both my home and vehicle.
There are definitely things beyond our control, but there are also ways we can help support the body’s natural recovery after environmental exposures like wildfire smoke. 🩷
