🥜 Peanut allergies are more than just a food sensitivity—they are an immune system reaction that can range from mild symptoms to a life-threatening emergency called anaphylaxis.

Common symptoms may include:
• Hives or itchy skin
• Nausea, vomiting, or stomach pain
• Coughing, wheezing, or difficulty breathing
• Dizziness or loss of consciousness

If you or a loved one has a peanut allergy, prevention is key. Always read food labels carefully, ask about ingredients when dining out, and carry prescribed emergency medication if recommended by your healthcare provider.

Awareness and preparedness can save lives.

At Soma M.D., we believe that education is an important part of staying healthy. Learn the signs, know the risks, and have a plan in place.

💙 Understanding Type 2 Diabetes with Soma M.D. 💙

Type 2 diabetes is a chronic condition that affects how your body uses blood sugar (glucose) for energy. When left unmanaged, it can increase the risk of heart disease, kidney disease, nerve damage, and vision problems — but the good news is that it can often be managed with healthy lifestyle choices and proper medical care.

⚠️ Common signs and symptoms may include: • Increased thirst
• Frequent urination
• Fatigue
• Blurred vision
• Unexplained weight loss

✅ Ways to lower your risk and support your health: • Stay physically active
• Eat a balanced, nutritious diet
• Maintain a healthy weight
• Keep up with regular check-ups
• Follow your provider’s care plan

Small changes today can make a big difference for your long-term health. If you have concerns about your blood sugar or risk factors, call us to schedule a visit to find out about screening and prevention options!

I wanted to talk about a trending topic today - microplastics!

🥤 Plastics are synthetic materials that contain various chemicals. These chemicals, such as per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) found in nonstick cookware and other products, may be released from plastics into the environment.

👃 After plastic has degraded into smaller fragments, people may inhale or ingest microplastics. Inhaled particles can deposit in the lung, enter the bloodstream, and spread to tissues and organs throughout the body. Microplastics can also enter the body when people drink liquids in plastic containers or even cosmetics.

🧍‍♂️Microplastics have been identified in many human organs and tissues, including the lungs, brain, blood, liver, kidneys, heart, spleen, colon, te**es, ovaries, and placenta. Microplastics also have been found in human breast milk and infants’ first stools.

📝Experiments performed on human tissues and in animals reveal that microplastics cause inflammation and damage to cells and to DNA. However, it is important to note that these findings are associations and do not prove that microplastics caused these adverse health outcomes.

👌To reduce exposure to microplastics through ingestion, people can avoid food packaged in plastic pouches, avoid microwaving food in plastic, and use reusable stainless steel water bottles.

✨ Small Business Tuesday ✨

Hope everyone had a great Easter Weekend! I wanted to turn everyone's attention to a condition that can have some serious consequences if not addressed quickly, Type 1 diabetes.

Type 1 diabetes accounts for 5% to 10% of all cases of diabetes and it is most commonly diagnosed in adolescence.

🏥 Patients with type 1 diabetes often have increased thirst, frequent urination, and unexplained weight loss. Other symptoms can include increased hunger, fatigue, and blurred vision. Young children may develop irritability, lethargy, and new-onset bed-wetting. At the time of diagnosis, up to 44% of children and 23% of adults have diabetic ketoacidosis, a serious medical condition that causes abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting and requires hospitalization and treatment with intravenous insulin.

💉 People with type 1 diabetes need lifelong insulin treatment. Most patients in the US are currently treated with automated insulin pumps. Alternatively, patients may be treated with multiple daily insulin injections into the tissue below the skin using an insulin pen or syringe.

💔 Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death among patients with type 1 diabetes, whose life expectancy is about 8 to 10 years shorter than people without type 1 diabetes.

✨✨ Small Business Tuesday ✨✨

Hope everyone had a great spring break. Welcome back! As I continue to educate, my next post focuses on hypothyroidism.

Hypothyroidism is a disease of thyroid hormone deficiency.

The most common cause of hypothyroidism worldwide is insufficient intake of iodine, a mineral found in iodized salt and some foods (such as seafood and dairy) that is needed for production of thyroid hormones. In the US and other high-income countries, the most common cause of hypothyroidism is an autoimmune condition called Hashimoto thyroiditis.

Untreated hypothyroidism may cause fatigue, weight gain, difficulty concentrating, memory loss, constipation, dry skin, menstrual irregularities, and cold intolerance. Hypothyroidism may also lead to high blood glucose levels in patients with diabetes and may increase the risk of heart failure, infertility, and miscarriage.
