Hello friends! Thank to you who have supported the Riddle Carrys On... gofundme campaign! If you'd like to support the project, link will be in comments.
Today, I'm gonna reveal to you a bit about the music, and the fabulous players that appear on this album.
The music comes from past and present - long time friends will recognize the most famous song I've written from the track list - a new version of "Whisky & Beer (For the Love of...)" . We've come a long way from the "bad old days", when I wrote that song with a half Guatemalan chaos shaman named Chains at the Autonomous Mutant Festival... the new version features a killer arrangement and folk rock feel. This will be the new definitive recording of this song we all know and love so well. Even if we don't drink anymore, like me. This one features flute & fiddle by Samantha Goldberg Blackthorn and the fiddle killer Mr. Dr. $ick (currenly touring with the Squirrel Nut Zippers).
The newest song on Riddle is "Headfull of Song". This is a song about many of the facets of a music lover's life. I wrote this one, inspired by meeting a piano man - a fellow who plays at duelling piano bars, who can play just about any song he has ever heard. When I asked him what fakebook he uses, he looked at my with tired, but twinkling eyes, and told me that he actually has a complusion to play the songs. This beautiful and haunting track brings together some of the finest musicians I've ever had the pleasure to play with, including Ben Saffer on clarinet (he was the clarinet player in the movie Waking Life), Colin Hancock, Esq. with multitracked horn section (band leader for Joymakers ATX, and Cat & the Hounds), and of course Samantha on flute and Mr. Dr. $ick on fiddle.
The title track, "the Riddle Carrys On", is one that my wife & I wrote on a cross country trip during covid lockdown. We wrote it in the car on ukulele, singing the la la part for hundreds of miles. The production features the talented rythmn section of drummer Noah Colbeck, Tom Crail on Tuba, Mr. Dr. $ick on electric guitar, as well as Dylan Blackthorn on accordion.
The mixes are 99% done and mastering will begin soon for the Riddle Carrys On, to be released Friday the 13th of November for 12" vinyl, CD, and streaming.
