Right around 18 months, something shifts in your kiddo’s brain. The single-word requests and pointing that carried your toddler through the past few months start turning into something closer to real sentences. By 24 months, most toddlers have gone from a handful of clear words to dozens and started putting them together into phrases.

This stretch is often called the “word explosion” for a reason. During this period, your toddler typically goes through a sharp increase in language skills, such as starting to use and understand 50 different words.

We lost it when we saw a toddler book that said:
“A is for albatross and awesome!”

And while a golf dad⛳️🏌🏼‍♂️would love that, it wasn’t actually functional for a toddler working their way through early communication milestones. There are so many other words that are used frequently in daily life and made up of sounds that toddlers can actually say.

📚 This book is filled with over 50 functional core words ➡️ the words that make up 60-80% of what we say daily to understand and talk about basic wants and needs. The more your child practices them, the more you get to have successful conversations while building their language skills.

We saved you the time and energy of looking up which words you should focus on by putting them into this simple, engaging story. And while you read to your baby or toddler, you can be reassured that every word included was thoughtfully selected by speech-language pathologists with a mission to help busy parents help their child’s future academic and social success.

And we know there are already so many resources out there for parents guaranteeing you progress with your littles, but we kept seeing the same problems with them over and over:

The foundational skills to build before they read their first words are significantly impactful to their future communication, social, and academic skills.

You might think reading to a baby who can’t talk yet (or even focus for more than a few seconds) is more about routine than results — a nice habit, but not much more. But long before a child sounds out their first word, they are building a foundation for reading.

The skills they develop in those early months and years, through pointing and page turning and listening, are the exact skills that predict how quickly and confidently they will read later on.

Newborns may not comprehend the story, but they will hear your voice, learn the rhythm of language, and begin building the foundation that makes reading possible. By the time they’re reaching for the book themselves, that foundation is already well underway.

Core words are basic and versatile words that make up the majority of what we say. Research on how communication develops shows that core words account for 60% - 80% of what we say on a daily basis. Whether a child is just starting to talk or already putting sentences together, core words are powerful and worth focusing on while speaking with them.

Some examples of core words:
more
go
stop
help
want
no
mine
up
you
me

What makes core words so powerful is their flexibility. The word ‘go’ can be used to ask for someone to move (go that way), to request to leave somewhere (can we go?), to cheer someone on (let’s go!), starting a game (ready, set, go), to ask for company (go with me), and to request action completion (go wash the dishes). One word with multiple meaningful contexts.

Why is using the word OR such a powerful strategy for building your toddler’s language while minimizing meltdowns?

✋🏽🤚🏽 Because it means you are offering them to choose between two choices, which gives them a target to shoot for and a response for you to expect.

* One or two?
* Hot or cold?
* Done or more?
* Milk or water?
* Stay or go?

The next time you want a response out of your toddler, offer them two choices that you’re willing to honor and wait for their response.

1️⃣ Don’t rush their response.
2️⃣ Give them time to process the choices you offered.
🔄 Repeat the choices if they haven’t responded after 10 seconds or so. And then wait again, if needed.

🗣️ You’ll start to notice your toddler’s response time increase, as well as their vocabulary, with continued use of this strategy.

🐄 When your toddler moos, oinks, or roars — they’re not just being silly.

🐷 They’re experimenting with airflow, mouth shapes, and voicing, all foundations for speech sound development. Mr. Rogers said it best: “Play is really the work of childhood.”

🦁 So next time you’re at the dinner table making animal sounds together? You’re doing exactly what you should be.
