After experiencing a traumatic event or living through highly stressful time periods, some people do not feel consistently anxious or consistently depressed. They move between the two.

There may be periods of feeling tense, vigilant, restless, and unable to slow down, followed by periods when the energy disappears. Motivation drops, withdrawal increases, and connection to people or activities becomes harder to access.

From the outside, this can look inconsistent. Internally, it may reflect a nervous system moving between activation and shutdown.

Hyperarousal helps prepare for danger. Hypoarousal reduces engagement when sustained stress becomes too much to maintain. Trauma does not explain every experience of anxiety or depression, but recognizing these two directions can make seemingly contradictory symptoms more understandable.

A person can understand exactly where a reaction came from and still be unable to stop it.

The conversation appears safe, but the body prepares for conflict. One mistake is unlikely to ruin anything, but shame arrives anyway. Rest is clearly needed, yet slowing down feels uncomfortable or even unsafe.

This gap between what someone knows and what they continue to feel is one reason trauma can be so frustrating. Insight may explain a reaction without changing the memories, expectations, and threat responses underneath it.

At Neuro Nuance Therapy and EMDR, we provide EMDR therapy in Austin for adults with a wide range of trauma-related concerns. Our trauma therapy services help clients understand these patterns, strengthen emotional regulation, and process experiences that continue to shape present reactions.

We offer in-person appointments at our North Austin office near MoPac and 183 and our Southwest Austin office on Bee Caves Road, along with telehealth across Texas. A free 15-minute consultation can be scheduled online.

How do you choose an EMDR therapist?

Many therapists offer EMDR.

That doesn’t necessarily mean they approach trauma the same way.

If you’re looking for EMDR therapy in Austin, it’s worth considering more than whether a therapist is EMDR trained or certified.

Some questions that may help guide your decision include:

• Do they primarily treat trauma, or is trauma just one of many specialties?

• Do they have experience working with PTSD, Complex PTSD (C-PTSD), dissociation, attachment trauma, or traumatic grief?

• How do they approach preparation and stabilization before trauma processing?

• Are they comfortable adapting EMDR when treatment becomes more complex?

• Do you feel safe, understood, and able to move at a pace that fits your nervous system?

The goal isn’t to find the “best” therapist. Because therapy depends so much on your comfort level and relationship with your therapist. It can be different for everyone.

It’s often more important to find the therapist whose experience, approach, and style are the best fit for your needs.

At Neuro Nuance Therapy and EMDR, we provide EMDR therapy in Austin for adults experiencing PTSD, Complex PTSD, dissociation, attachment trauma, traumatic grief, shame, and other trauma-related concerns using an individualized, trauma-focused approach.

If you’re trying to decide whether EMDR is right for you, or how to choose an EMDR therapist, we created a guide to help you make an informed decision. 👇

Grief and trauma are not always separate experiences.

When a loss is sudden, violent, unexpected, or deeply distressing, the nervous system may struggle to process both the trauma and the grief. For some people, this can contribute to traumatic grief or prolonged grief, making it difficult to adapt to the loss even as time passes.

While grief itself is not a disorder, trauma can complicate the natural grieving process. Intrusive memories, avoidance, guilt, emotional numbness, hypervigilance, or feeling “stuck” in the loss may all become part of the experience.

At Neuro Nuance Therapy and EMDR, we provide EMDR therapy in Austin for adults experiencing a wide range of trauma-related concerns, including PTSD, Complex PTSD (C-PTSD), dissociation, attachment trauma, traumatic grief, and prolonged grief.

EMDR therapy can help process distressing memories surrounding a loss while trauma-focused psychotherapy supports individuals as they integrate the experience, reconnect with their lives, and move forward without leaving their loved one behind.

We offer in-person appointments in North Austin and Southwest Austin, secure telehealth throughout Texas, and free 15-minute consultations.

Attachment wounds don’t only affect relationships, they can influence how we experience safety, trust, conflict, and connection throughout life.

Many people associate EMDR therapy primarily with PTSD, but trauma can affect us in many different ways. At Neuro Nuance Therapy & EMDR, we provide EMDR therapy in Austin for a wide range of trauma-related concerns, including painful life experiences, PTSD, Complex PTSD (C-PTSD), dissociation, traumatic grief, shame, and attachment wounds.

When early relationships involve chronic stress, neglect, inconsistency, or other adverse experiences, the nervous system may adapt in ways that continue into adulthood. These patterns can affect intimate relationships, friendships, boundaries, self-worth, and the ability to feel emotionally safe with others.

EMDR therapy can help process the experiences that shaped these patterns while supporting healthier relationships and a more secure sense of self. Depending on each person’s needs, treatment may also integrate parts-informed therapy and other trauma-focused approaches to promote lasting change.

If you’re looking for EMDR therapy in Austin for attachment trauma or other trauma-related concerns, Neuro Nuance Therapy & EMDR offers:

* In-person appointments in North and Southwest Austin
* Telehealth throughout Texas
* Free 15-minute consultations

Can EMDR work if you don’t remember your trauma?

Yes. A complete autobiographical memory is not always required.

EMDR therapy can sometimes begin with what is available in the present, such as:

• A strong emotional reaction
• A body sensation
• A negative belief about yourself
• A recurring trigger or pattern
• A partial or fragmented memory

That doesn’t mean therapists assume a hidden memory exists or try to uncover one.

Instead, the goal is to understand what your nervous system is responding to and determine the safest place to begin. If significant dissociation or memory fragmentation is present, treatment often starts with assessment, stabilization, and building internal cooperation before moving into trauma reprocessing.

One of the most common misconceptions about EMDR therapy is that clients must remember every detail of what happened before healing can occur. In reality, many people experience meaningful improvement without ever recovering a complete chronological memory.

At Neuro Nuance Therapy and EMDR, we recently published a detailed guide explaining how EMDR therapy may be adapted when memories are unclear, including the roles of emotional flashbacks, body sensations, the BASK model, and structural dissociation.

If you’re considering EMDR therapy in Austin, understanding how treatment is tailored for complex trauma and dissociation can help you find a provider whose approach matches your needs.

EMDR therapy is often associated with PTSD, but one of the deepest wounds trauma leaves behind is shame.

Many people living with PTSD or complex trauma (C-PTSD) don’t only struggle with intrusive memories, hypervigilance, or emotional overwhelm. They also carry persistent beliefs like:

“I’m not good enough.”
“I’m broken.”
“Everything is my fault.”

Over time, these beliefs can shape relationships, boundaries, perfectionism, people-pleasing, and the way a person experiences themselves long after the traumatic events have ended.

One of the goals of EMDR therapy is not simply to reduce distress associated with traumatic memories—but to also to help reprocess the experiences that gave rise to these deeply held shame-based beliefs.

As memories become more adaptively integrated, many people notice that the beliefs supporting chronic shame begin to shift as well. Instead of viewing themselves through the lens of trauma, they begin to experience a more accurate, compassionate, and integrated sense of self.

At Neuro Nuance Therapy and EMDR, we provide EMDR therapy in Austin for adults experiencing PTSD, complex trauma (C-PTSD), attachment trauma, dissociation, and trauma-related shame. Treatment is individualized and may include adapted EMDR, parts-informed therapy, and trauma-focused psychotherapy based on each client’s readiness and clinical needs.

Healing from trauma isn’t only about desensitizing memories from the past.

It’s also about shifting the beliefs that continue to limit the present.

Can EMDR work with dissociation?

Yes, but it often needs to be adapted.

One of the most common misconceptions is that dissociation automatically means someone is not a good candidate for EMDR therapy. In reality, many people with complex trauma and dissociative symptoms can benefit from EMDR when treatment is thoughtfully paced and tailored to their needs.

The key is understanding that dissociation is often a protective response, not a barrier to healing.

When dissociation is present, effective treatment may involve more time spent on assessment, stabilization, grounding, nervous system regulation, parts work, and strengthening the ability to remain present before deeper trauma processing begins. For many clients, this preparation is what makes later reprocessing both safer and more effective.

EMDR therapy isn’t simply about processing traumatic memories as quickly as possible. It’s about helping the brain integrate those experiences without overwhelming the nervous system.

At Neuro Nuance Therapy and EMDR, we specialize in working with adults in Austin, TX experiencing complex trauma, PTSD, dissociation, and attachment-related injuries using an EMDR-primary, trauma-informed approach that emphasizes safety, readiness, and long-term healing.

We have offices in North and Southwest Austin and offer telehealth virtual EMDR sessions across Texas.

If you’ve wondered whether EMDR can work when dissociation is part of your experience, the answer is often yes—with the right clinical approach.
