08/20/2026

The Black Men’s Health Clinic (BMHC) has been invited to participate in the 2026 Austin/Travis County Community Health Improvement Plan (CHIP) planning sessions, where an intentionally assembled group of stakeholders brings relevant experience, expertise and community perspectives to help shape goals, strategies and measurable actions around identified health priorities.

For BMHC, the invitation creates another opportunity to bring forward what we learn through our health navigation and coordination work. BMHC works with people who are not successfully connecting to care, identifies what is standing in the way, helps get them to the right provider or service, coordinates the handoff, and stays involved to determine whether the care actually happened. Doing this work across different providers and systems allows BMHC to identify where the same barriers and breakdowns keep occurring and bring that firsthand knowledge into discussions about what needs to improve.

The CHIP is one stage of Austin and Travis County’s three-year community health planning cycle. Phase 1, the Community Health Assessment (CHA), uses data and community input to identify and better understand local health concerns. BMHC contributed three reports from its Health Advancement Initiative, piloted in Manor: Health Rates in the City of Manor; Health Programs and Services in the City of Manor; and Health Policies and Agreements in the City of Manor. Learn more about the BMHC Health Advancement Initiative: https://sites.google.com/blackmenshealthclinic.org/2025manorhealthsurveyrecords. Phase 2, Priority Setting, uses the findings to determine which health issues will receive focused attention. Phase 3, CHIP Planning, brings selected stakeholders together to develop goals, strategies and measurable actions to address those priorities. Phase 4, Implementation, puts those strategies into practice. Phase 5, Measurement, tracks progress to determine what is improving, what is not and where changes are needed.

Following last week’s Manor Journal feature highlighting BMHC’s national recognition, hear directly from Larry Wallace Sr., Hon. D.H.A., on what these honors represent:
“We’re doing something that’s unique and different. It’s out of the box...it acknowledges again the hard work that our team has put forth to make a difference in the lives of men.”

The recognition at the 2026 Stevie® Awards reinforces what began locally in Manor and has continued to grow: a different approach to closing healthcare gaps, built by a dedicated team committed to making a meaningful difference in the lives of men and the communities we serve.

Not every inflammatory disease is an autoimmune disease.

Autoimmune diseases involve the immune system attacking healthy tissues. On the other hand, autoinflammatory diseases are caused by an overactive innate immune system, leading to episodes of inflammation without infection or injury.1

Know the signs:2
🔸 Recurrent fevers
🔸 Joint pain and swelling
🔸 Skin rashes
🔸 Fatigue
🔸 Abdominal pain
🔸 Mouth sores

Many autoinflammatory conditions are rare, and diagnosis can take years. Raising awareness helps people recognize symptoms earlier and seek appropriate medical care.

Understanding your health is the first step toward improving it. If you are experiencing persistent or unexplained symptoms, don't ignore them. Early evaluation and connection to care can make a meaningful difference.

Getting people into care requires more than providing information or handing someone a referral. It takes trusted individuals who can help people navigate through the process, build meaningful connections, and keep them moving towards the support they need. Antonio Montgomery, BMHC Community Health Worker (Behavior Health), plays an important role in making these connections possible.

Antonio's work is critical in establishing relationships and coordinating programs that ensure BMHC’s efforts meet the needs of the community. He brings more than a decade of professional experience in healthcare settings, as well as expertise in internal controls, regulatory compliance, and operational excellence.

Most importantly, Antonio is dedicated to making a difference in the lives of others.

"BMHC means purpose to me. It’s more than a place of work; it’s an opportunity to serve, connect, and make a real difference in the lives of men and families in our community. My role has allowed me to build relationships, provide support, and help people recognize that their health and well-being matter. What motivates me is knowing that even one conversation, one resource, or one person feeling seen can create a lasting impact. I’m proud to be part of work that is bigger than me." - Antonio Montgomery

Through behavioral health coordination and community outreach, he helps strengthen the bridge between individuals who need support and the resources available to them—advancing BMHC’s goal of guiding people from need to navigation, to care and follow-through.

We are proud to spotlight Antonio and the dedication he brings to supporting the well-being of our community every day.

Thank you, Antonio, for all that you do!

We are making headlines! BMHC’s national recognition has been featured in The Manor Journal, highlighting our two honors at the 2026 American Business Awards® and the story of an organization whose roots began in Manor.

For BMHC Strategic Communications Manager and former Manor resident Pamela Parker, the recognition reflects the importance of ensuring underserved communities have a voice:
“Helping Manor residents have a regional voice through our community survey while BMHC earns national recognition is impactful, but advocating daily for our community’s future is what makes this work truly meaningful.”

BMHC Marketing Associate Manager and Manor resident Felicia Chandler shared a similar connection:
“Watching something rooted here grow and receive recognition beyond the communities we serve reminds me that tremendous work can start locally and reach far beyond where it began.”

We thank The Manor Journal for highlighting our roots, our people, and the work that continues to grow from Manor.

More than just a baby shower, the Austin event will bring together healthcare providers, mental health professionals, birth workers, community organizations, and families. Attendees can connect with maternal and mental health resources, doulas, midwives, health insurance enrollment assistance, and dedicated resources for fathers and children.

Event Details:
Saturday, August 22, 2026
11:00 a.m.–2:00 p.m.
Mt. Zion Baptist Church, 2938 E. 13th Street, Austin, TX 78702.

We look forward to joining community leaders and families for an afternoon centered on healthier pregnancies, healthier families, and stronger communities.

08/11/2026

On June 9, BMHC attended the Stevie® Awards ceremony, where the organization was recognized nationally for its work and impact. Behind the scenes that evening, Larry Wallace Sr., Hon. D.H.A., reflected on what receiving this recognition means for BMHC and, more importantly, for the communities we serve.

“Winning this award really means a lot to us. We’re a small team, but we do mighty work. We’re veteran-owned and veteran-led. It’s really going to give us a chance to lift up more folks in our community and to expand really what we do.”

That recognition was later highlighted by Ujima Magazine, which shared BMHC’s achievement and the significance of this milestone for an organization committed to improving healthcare access and closing gaps in underserved communities.

National recognition gives BMHC a larger platform, but the purpose remains the same: use that platform to lift others, expand our reach, and help more people get connected to care.

Thank you to Ujima Magazine for recognizing this achievement and helping amplify the work happening in our community.
