Eternally grateful for the life changing work of Jean Houston.❣

We pause today to honor the passing of Dr. Jean Houston, one of the great visionary teachers of our time, whose last words were reported to be: "Thank you, I love you."
Those words feel entirely right for a woman whose life's work was calling forth the fullness of human possibility.
For the SoulCollage® community, Jean Houston holds a special place in our origin story. It was in Jean's three-year Human Capacities Training, from 1987 to 1989, that our founder Seena B. Frost began making collaged cards as her final project for the program, one for each person in the cohort. From that act of love and creativity, through years of quiet gestation in Seena's therapy groups and workshops, SoulCollage® was born. This card, made by Seena herself, honors the one who helped plant the seed. Today we hold it with gratitude. Thank you, Jean. We love you.

A dog's heart rate synchronizes with its owner's during calm contact.

Not metaphorically. Biologically. Both heart rates slow. Both nervous systems shift toward rest. The dog and the human are co-regulating.

Your nervous system is not a closed system. It is in constant conversation with every living thing in your environment.

This is why petting an animal lowers cortisol. Why eye contact with a dog triggers an oxytocin release in both species. Why children raised around pets show different immune profiles. Why therapy animals on hospital floors measurably change patient outcomes.

As a physician I have been trained to think about medicine as something that comes in a bottle or a procedure room. But the evidence for what happens in the space between a person and an animal they love is harder to dismiss than I once thought.

If you have a pet, you are already doing something therapeutic every day that most people are not prescribed.

What does your animal do that nothing else does for you?

Mindsight: Your Brain, But With a User’s Manual I read this book when it was first published in 2009. Since Dan Siegel continues to be a thought leader in the circles I find myself learning in as a therapist, I decided to re-read since I’ve done lots of learning since 2009! I’m so glad I had s...

“When we have learned how to listen to trees, then the brevity and the quickness and the childlike hastiness of our thoughts achieve an incomparable joy.”
