🚨 PARTY WITH MARLOW 🚨

As they say goodbye to Austin 🙃 the locally owned and operated bar meant to be the LEADING example of a revitalization of “Old 6th” is forced to close because nothing else has been revitalized around the bar 🥲

They’re having a “Death of Marlow” party starting at 3PM tomorrow - I think it’ll be one of the better things to do tomorrow in Austin on an otherwise HOT and boring day 🥵 it’s cool and comfortable inside Marlow - you’ll enjoy it, I can promise you that 🤝

IF you can’t make it to Marlow tomorrow - go to your nearest establishment that makes Austin special to you - support them IRL or on social media by sharing a post or story or tagging them.

If we don’t support the cool places - we don’t get to keep cool places around. Austin will be another big city with big businesses you can find ANYWHERE IN THE COUNTRY - look at South Congress 👀 and it will be A LOT less special if we don’t do our best to protect these types of small, locally owned businesses ❤️

🍔 Apparently it’s Burger Day in Europe - and while we’ve already celebrated Burger Day here, I figured it was as good of a reason as any to show off some of my (mostly) burgers from the past few years ❤️

This was day 1 of NOT A DAMN CHANCE BURGER! at their first spot on Rainey St 📍

The POPE OF BBQ - Ernest - smoked this cheeseburger just for me 😂 while we visited Burnt Bean Co / Ernest Servantes

This is prob the best burger in Lockhart - the great and addicting Old Pal does burgers very well

This was a collab burger - Cuantos Tacos ™️| ATX teamed up with someone and I can’t for the life of me remember - but the burgers were insane and I loved this pic

One of my top 5 burgers, Buddy’s Burger - I did my best but was still sorta early in my burger photo days - I helped grab a few of their initial images 🫡

👹 TEXAS’ OLDEST DIVE BAR? 👹

Devil’s Backbone Tavern • 4041 FM 32 Fischer, TX

They call themselves “The Oldest Dive Bar in Texas” and while “dive bar” is probably impossible to officially define, the history here is pretty wild.

The property dates back to the late 1890s, when the original stone room served as an outpost, mail + stagecoach stop and blacksmith shop. It was also used to temporarily hold criminals while they were being transported to jail. According to the folks at Devil’s Backbone, that space is now part of the men’s restroom and the old jail door is STILL there 😂

The tavern came along around the end of Prohibition in the 1930s, conveniently sitting across the county line from then-dry Hays County.

We were also told the owner somehow had EVERYTHING needed to open a bar the moment Prohibition ended…which apparently raised a few questions about when the drinks really started flowing 👀

A gas station + package store were added on by the 50’s.

There are plenty of ghost stories around the property too, especially the dancehall: unexplained voices, horses heard at night, doors moving on their own and even a signed dollar supposedly falling from the ceiling at the feet of the couple who had put it there years earlier.

The dancehall eventually went dormant before musicians Robyn + John Ludwick helped purchase the property in 2018 and brought it back to life.

Today you’ll find live music, cold beer and thousands of signed dollar bills covering the ceiling.

My friend Raf Miastkowski of Texas Dives who literally wrote the Texas Dive Bar Encyclopedia, lists Devil’s Backbone among his favorite dive bars in America. As Raf puts it, you can’t just build a dive. They become dives over time through the regulars, stories + community that give them character.

So if you make the drive out, grab a beer, sit down, listen to the music and enjoy Devil’s Backbone for what it is. Don’t ruin the vibe 🍻

🍖 THIS MICHELIN BBQ TRUCK IS STILL SOMEHOW UNDERRATED IN AUSTIN 🍖

Distant Relatives 3901 Promontory Point Dr at Meanwhile Brewing Company

Distant Relatives has a Michelin Bib Gourmand, Chef Damien Brockway is a 2x James Beard Best Chef: Texas semifinalist, they’ve been on the Texas Monthly top 50 BBQ list & Infatuation Austin currently ranks their brisket #4 in Austin…literally calling it “among the most underrated brisket spots in Austin” 😂

He grew up in the Northeast, graduated from the Culinary Institute of America and spent his career cooking through New York, Boston + San Francisco before coming to Austin and joining Uchiko as Chef de Cuisine in 2013 👨‍🍳

While at Uchiko, Damien worked alongside Charlie Wang + Tim Boyer, who would eventually go on to open Michelin-starred Craft Omakase here in Austin.

After Uchiko, Damien started digging deeper into his own family history and the foodways of the African diaspora.

His grandmother grew up the daughter of hog farmers + peanut sharecroppers along the Virginia/North Carolina border, while Damien’s research into his own genealogy traced his ancestry back to Mali, Nigeria + Cameroon.

That research eventually became Distant Relatives, which started as a pop-up in 2020.

The idea is BBQ through the lens of the African diaspora 🔥 using Central Texas techniques like pecan + mixed hardwood smoke alongside West African spices, fermentation + preservation techniques and a nose-to-tail / root-to-stem approach.

So you’ll find a menu that feels very different from your typical Central Texas BBQ spot.

And then there’s the BBQ itself 🥩 Michelin calls Damien’s truck “the one to beat” at Meanwhile, while The Infatuation currently has their brisket ranked ahead of Interstellar at #4 in Austin 👀

For a place with this much recognition, I still don’t feel like Distant Relatives gets talked about locally nearly as much as some of Austin’s other big BBQ names…but not all influencers are foodies 👀😂
