Woo-hoo! A year+ of planning comes to fruition!

Working with couples with complex or unresolved trauma presents a particular set of challenges for therapists. Katie Barksdale and I start our eight-session Trauma Wise Couple Therapist training and consultation group in March. Check out the attached flyer or go to our website traumawisetherapy.com.

I'm excited to partner with the PACT Institute on this course for PACT therapists on utilizing video recordings in clinical practice. If you're a PACT-trained therapist who hasn't started recording sessions yet, this workshop might be just what you need to take the plunge.

As PACT therapists, we’re taught to record sessions to help our clients see their micro expressions and reactions to their partners in real time moment to moment.

In his podcast, Human Nurture, my friend Jason Brand explores various aspects of couples therapy through a PACT lens. In the first season, he looked at the foundational elements of PACT including psychodrama/Gestalt, trance, mindfulness, body/somatic, developmental neuroscience, social justice, and attachment theory through interviews with Stan Tatkin Lou Cozolino, Jeffrey Zeig, Ed Tronick, and other experts. In his second season, Jason interviews therapists and couples to explore the skills and perspectives needed for couples therapists to help their clients. I'm excited to be Jason's guest producer for episodes in part two of this season. Check it out below. You can also check out his FB page:

I'm sharing information on an "Intro to ISTDP" presentation a colleague is making. https://web.cvent.com/event/839817ee-9c5d-484a-ac50-3d399e9eded7/summary?fbclid=IwAR3lU-dGMDOfupnlox4pu4oSBORIY7knkLyQAF9v45WrQ7p4z8G3hkgl0lQ

From my colleague who is giving the presentation:

I will be giving a 3-hour introduction to ISTDP together with my primary teacher and mentor, Marvin Skorman, who graciously agreed to be my co-presenter. The workshop offers CEUs and will be virtual.
This will take place on Tuesday, August 10th starting at 1:00 PM, PST. Unfortunately, the venue is such that at minimum, in order to attend the seminar, you would need to sign up for and purchase an entire day's worth of seminars.
Details below.
I will be showing video of a patient that will highlight the following:
The work with this patient demonstrates what ISTDP (graded format) can look like where there are moments when there is no conscious therapeutic alliance, where I am not getting ahead of the patient, and where I work on undoing projection of will/defiance. You will also see me engage in ‘use of self’/the ‘real relationship’.
Other items that are demonstrated: Empathetic use of mini head-on collisions without any added pressure, going above and beyond in not pushing an external agenda onto the patient, and addressing the omnipotent transference resistance.
The last session (termination) involves recognizing an easy-to-miss major accomplishment, facilitating termination, and not being perfectionistic about termination but taking the cues from the patient in terms of her own standards for termination.
Also, I facilitate a corrective emotional experience where the patient can experience a relationship where her will is honored and she is not a disappointment.
Learning objectives:
Establishing therapeutic goals.
Establishing and maintaining a collaborative therapist/patient relationship.
Recognizing and handling resistance.
Determining whether a patient’s anxiety is at an optimal level or is impeding progress or even worse, is exacerbating symptoms.
Distinguishing feelings from defenses — not always obvious.
Introducing termination.
