Sometimes a diverse student’s FIRST language sample is not the most accurate one.

A weak storytelling sample may reflect:
• limited exposure to English
• unfamiliarity with storytelling expectations
• cultural narrative differences
NOT necessarily a disorder.

That is why retells matter.

When we model a story first and then ask the student to retell it, we stop measuring only performance and begin measuring learning potential.

Most of us were taught to think of language sampling as “expressive language testing.”

But a strong language sample gives us SO much more than that.

In one connected conversation or story sample, we can observe:
✔ expressive language
✔ receptive language
✔ vocabulary
✔ pragmatics
✔ fluency
✔ intelligibility
✔ narrative structure
✔ sequencing
✔ learning potential
✔ and more…

That is why language sampling has become the FIRST thing I do during evaluations.
