This week is Asthma Peak Week — the point in the calendar when childhood asthma hospitalizations climb higher than any other week of the year.

The reasons stack up fast: ragweed pollen is near its highest point, school buildings bring new exposure to mold, dust, and respiratory viruses, and kids are trading germs in ways they haven't since last spring. Layer all of that together, and even well-controlled asthma can suddenly flare.

If your child's rescue inhaler feels like it's working overtime this week, it might be time to check in on their action plan.

Coughing during recess. Wheezing after gym class. Getting winded faster than classmates. These aren't just "kid things" — they could be asthma symptoms worth flagging.

Asthma and food allergies are different conditions, and they need different plans. Different triggers (exercise, cold air, pollen — not food), different medication (a rescue inhaler, not epinephrine), and different response steps. Mixing them up under pressure is exactly what a separate, clearly labeled plan prevents. It matters even more if your child has both conditions — asthma is actually a risk factor for a more severe allergic reaction, so the school needs each plan on file and easy to tell apart.
