Lemon stands out for the shift of seasons thanks to its antioxidant content, making it a winner for boosting immunity and encouraging healthy detox.
More specifically, the type of antioxidant most notable in lemons is a particular flavonoid. Flavonoids sweep the body of damaging free radicals, and lemons deliver the specific flavonoid quercetin. Quercetin is nature’s antihistamine.
It has become a popular over-the-counter supplement in recent years, especially for prevention and recovery of viral respiratory infections.
In the cooler months, getting a daily dose of quercetin in a natural, whole-food, bioavailable form is easy – just sip that warm lemon water! Additionally, lemons are seasonal in the fall and winter months, making them obviously medicinal in Ayurveda.
The most sattvic (pure) color in Ayurveda is gold, and therefore a large emphasis is placed on anything naturally golden in color: honey, ghee, turmeric, and lemon.
All of these are revered in Ayurvedic medicine, and make accessible kitchen remedies for countless ailments.
