🪷 Honoring our heritage also means questioning what we’ve inherited.
As we recognize Indigenous Peoples’ Day and Hispanic Heritage Month, let’s talk about Marianismo— the cultural expectations that have taught generations of Latinas to be submissive, obedient, self-sacrificing, forgiving, and to put her needs last.
Many of these ideals were shaped by colonization, Catholicism, and patriarchal gender roles that reinforced women’s subordination and undermined their autonomy.
Before colonization, women held powerful roles in many Indigenous communities. That history deserves to be remembered.
Unlearning Marianismo isn’t about rejecting our culture. It’s about questioning what was imposed, reclaiming our power, and choosing what we carry forward. 🪷
✨ We can honor our ancestors while questioning what was imposed on them and reclaiming our power, bodies, and voices.
✨ We can reclaim the freedom to define and express our gender, femininity, and sexuality on our own terms, without shame or limitations.
✨ We can love our families while setting healthy boundaries that foster reciprocal, sustainable relationships.
✨ We can celebrate our heritage while breaking harmful generational cycles.
We get to decide what we keep, redefine, and release.
