OSA vs. UARS: Understanding the Difference Matters!

Not all sleep-disordered breathing looks the same. Understanding the differences between Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) and Upper Airway Resistance Syndrome (UARS) is essential for proper evaluation and care.

A sleep study is an important step, but who interprets your results matters just as much! Recognizing subtle breathing disturbances and understanding the full clinical picture can make a meaningful difference in identifying sleep-related breathing disorders.

A good functional approach is key!

A good functional approach is key!

Mouth breathing is a symptom—not a diagnosis.

The same outward pattern can have very different underlying drivers, including nasal inflammation, structural obstruction, enlarged tonsils or adenoids, sleep-disordered breathing, and functional or behavioral patterns. Often, more than one factor is involved.

That’s why treatment shouldn’t begin with the symptom alone.

At The Breathe Institute, we look at the whole patient—structure, function, and physiology—to better understand what may be driving the pattern and help determine an individualized pathway of care.
Mouth breathing tells us where to look, not what to treat.

Surgery can create the opportunity for better movement, while orofacial myofunctional therapy helps the brain and muscles develop new, lasting patterns. When anatomy and function are addressed together, patients have the best opportunity for long-term success.
