Austin Speech Labs

Austin Speech Labs Austin Speech Labs is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization in Austin, TX.

Austin Speech Labs was founded in 2008 when two speech therapists saw a gap between services covered by medical insurance and what stroke survivors truly need to return to their social and professional lives. Speech language pathologists, Shilpa Shamapant and Shelley Adair, founded Austin Speech Labs to provide the intensive and individualized speech therapy required for optimum recovery. We striv

e to provide a supportive environment for our clients to recover their communication skills after suffering stroke. It is important to our organization to bring these survivors into our Austin Speech Labs community and prevent isolation after such a traumatic event. We want to help them regain their speech so they can express themselves to their families and loved ones, which we consider a basic human need. Austin Speech Labs believes that giving them back their voice will help them rejoin the larger community. At Austin Speech Labs, we know that stroke recovery is not one-size-fits-all. Every brain is unique, which is why our intensive speech and cognitive therapy is tailored to individual needs.
🗣️ Speech & Language TherapyWe target aphasia and apraxia. Clients work on word-finding, sentence structure, and speaking clarity to express their thoughts clearly.
🧠 Cognitive TherapyRecovery goes beyond speech. We rebuild critical thinking, memory retention, focus, and daily problem-solving skills.
đź“– Reading & Writing TherapyWe help clients reconnect with text. Exercises focus on reading comprehension, spelling, and typing to navigate a digital world.
Every session brings us closer to reclaiming a voice.

Behind every pause and every effortful sentence, there is still a person with so much to say. Living with aphasia can feel incredibly isolating, but the most powerful thing we can offer is our time and patience.

This year’s One Word At A Time was absolutely amazing, emceed by two members of the Austin Speech Labs community.

Client speakers shared their powerful journeys, demonstrating that stroke recovery isn’t just about therapy—it’s about reclaiming identity, connection, and purpose.

Thanks to our amazing community, this year’s event raised over $650,000, including reaching our Fund-A-Need goal for the evening, which directly provides life-changing speech therapy for stroke survivors. We are so thankful for the support we have received - it helps survivors not only regain their voices but also find the confidence to use them in powerful, public ways.

Aphasia affects communication, NOT intelligence. 🧠✨ Words might be hard to find, but the person inside is still there.
Aphasia is a language disorder that steals words, not intelligence. 🧠 It impacts a person’s ability to speak, write, and understand language—often after a stroke or brain injury. The thoughts are there; finding the words is the battle. Let’s spread patience and understanding this . 💜
