The mornings start to cool off. The patios fill back up. And being outside sounds good again.

For a lot of older adults, a long Texas summer means months spent mostly indoors. Fall is a chance to get back out, even for an hour.

A few easygoing ideas for you and your mom or dad:

• A slow loop around Mueller Lake Park
• A stroll through the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center
• Coffee on a shady patio, just to people-watch
• A drive out to Lake Travis for the sunset
• Or simply moving morning coffee to the front porch

Now we want to hear from you. Where's your parent's favorite fall spot in Austin? Tell us in the comments. Another family might find their next outing in your answer.

And if getting out the door takes more help than it used to, our Wellness Care caregivers can help with transportation and good company along the way.

Caring for someone living with dementia brings questions you can't always find answers to online. 💚

We're proud to partner with AGE of Central Texas on a free four-part series for family caregivers and care partners. Each session gives you practical guidance, real conversation, and support from people who understand.

📅 Every other Wednesday, 11 AM to 12 PM

1️⃣ Oct 7: Understanding Dementia & Communication
2️⃣ Oct 21: A Day in the Life of Someone with Dementia
3️⃣ Nov 4: Enhancing Daily Life for Those with Dementia
4️⃣ Nov 18: Support for Family & Spouse Caregivers

You can join one session or all four. Come in person for hands-on activities and group discussion at AGE of Central Texas Headquarters (7640 Guadalupe St, Austin), or watch live online and send your questions to the presenters.

Our caregivers are certified in dementia care, and supporting families through this journey is at the heart of what we do. We'd love to see you there.

Picture your dad's nightstand.

Phone charging. Hearing aid case plugged in. Maybe a tablet tucked under the pillow so he can read before bed.

It's a normal setup. It's also exactly what Fire Prevention Week (October 4 to 10) is asking families to look at. This year's theme is all about safe charging.

Next time you're over, take two minutes:

• Move chargers off the bed and couch and onto a hard, flat surface
• Swap mystery cords for the charger that came with the device
• Unplug once things are fully charged
• If a battery gets very hot, swells, or smells strange, stop using it

Small habits = Real peace of mind.

Nobody has ever said, "I can't wait to talk about long term care over dinner."

But October is Long Term Care Planning Month, so here's a thought: have the conversation while everyone is calm, fed, and still laughing at Grandpa's stories. Ask what matters most to them. Where they want to live. Who they trust to help decide. Write it down.

These choices are so much easier to make on a quiet Tuesday than in the middle of a hard week. Our team is happy to walk your family through what home care can look like.

She keeps track of Dad's prescriptions, Mom's appointments, the kids' schedules, and somehow the good scissors. Her own checkup? Rescheduled three times.

Happy Women's Health & Fitness Day to every woman running a household and a caregiving calendar at once. Take the walk. Book the appointment. Let someone else cover a shift so you can.

Respite care exists for this exact reason. We'll handle the day, you handle you.

A good neighbor returns your ladder. A great neighbor notices the newspapers stacking up next door and shows up with banana bread as the excuse.

Happy National Good Neighbor Day, Austin. Wave at the house you always mean to wave at. Ask how they're really doing, then stay for the answer.

And if that porch chat reveals someone could use a little extra help at home, we're always happy to talk it through.

Falls are one of the leading causes of injury among older adults, especially those living with dementia, but many falls can be prevented.

Take a few minutes this week to check for:
🚧 Trip hazards
💡 Proper lighting
🧹 Cluttered spaces

Discuss fall risks with loved ones. Helping seniors stay safe at home is one of the many ways we support independence and confidence every day.

Today, we pause to remember the lives lost, the families forever changed, and the courage shown on September 11, 2001.

On this Patriot Day and the 25th anniversary of 9/11, we honor the memory of those we lost and express our gratitude to the first responders, service members, and everyday heroes who answered the call with strength and selflessness.

As caregivers, we are reminded that compassion, connection, and caring for one another remain some of the most powerful ways we can honor their legacy.
