The 2015 United States Transgender Survey (USTS) is the largest survey examining the experiences of transgender people with 27,715 respondents. Respondents with disabilities also faced higher rates of economic instability and mistreatment. Nearly 24% were unemployed, 45% were living in poverty, 59% of transgender people with disabilities experienced serious psychological distress, 54% reported they attempted su***de in their lifetime, and 42% reported higher rates of mistreatment by health care providers. One reason for the high percentage of su***de attempts may be due to distress related to barriers to obtaining transition-related health care, such as a lack of insurance coverage, inability to afford those procedures, or lack of access to providers.

As the national conversation about transgender people continues to evolve, public education efforts to improve understanding and acceptance of transgender people are crucial. This includes eliminating barriers to quality, affordable health care, putting an end to discrimination in schools, the workplace, and other areas of public life, and creating systems of support at the municipal, state, and federal levels that meet the needs of transgender people and reduce hardships no one should have to face.
