Triple feeding is one of the most physically and emotionally demanding feeding plans a new parent can experience, and many families are doing it without fully understanding why or for how long.

Triple feeding typically involves 3 steps at every feeding:

1️⃣ Breastfeed baby
2️⃣ Supplement with pumped milk and/or formula
3️⃣ Pump to help protect or increase milk supply

This plan is often used temporarily when:
✨ Baby isn’t transferring milk effectively
✨ Weight gain is a concern
✨ Milk supply needs additional stimulation
✨ Baby was born early or has feeding challenges

While triple feeding can be a useful tool in certain situations, it’s meant to be a short-term strategy with ongoing support and reassessment, not something parents are expected to sustain indefinitely without help.

If you’re triple feeding right now and feeling exhausted, overwhelmed, or discouraged, you are not alone. Support matters, and feeding plans should work for your family, not against your wellbeing.

Want to learn more about when triple feeding is appropriate, how to make it more manageable, and signs it may be time to reassess the plan? Read this week’s blog for a deeper dive! Link in bio

If pumping is painful, uncomfortable, or leaving your ni***es sore afterward, the answer is not always “turn the suction up higher.” 👀

One of the most common mistakes we see is parents using their breast pump at a suction level that’s way too strong for their body, often thinking stronger suction = more milk.

But more suction does not automatically mean more output. In fact, pumping too high can:
✨ Cause ni**le pain or damage
✨ Increase swelling
✨ Make milk flow less efficiently
✨ Lead to elastic ni**le discomfort
✨ Create dread around pumping sessions

Your pump should feel comfortable and effective- not like you’re “surviving” it.

A good rule of thumb:
👉 Use the highest suction level that still feels comfortable.
👉 Pain is not the goal.
👉 Your body releases milk better when it feels relaxed and supported.

And don’t forget: fl**ge sizing, pump settings, replacement parts, and timing all matter too.
If pumping has been hurting, it may be time to reassess your setup instead of just pushing through the pain.

Join us for Bosom Buddies Tuesday, May 26th from 1:30-3:00pm at our Ramble Clinic. This week’s guest speaker is Mollie Doyle a Certified Babywearing Specialist.

Mollie Doyle is a certified babywearing educator and the founder of Carried Close ATX. She fell in love with babywearing during the newborn days with her first baby, soaking in the snuggles while still getting things done. But when her second was born it became a lifeline to care for a newborn and toddler at the same time. Mollie became an educator because she believes babywearing is a tool every parent deserves to have, and because when she went looking for in-person support after her youngest was born, it simply didn’t exist. So she created it. Through 1:1 in-home consultations, group gatherings, and community classes, Mollie helps Austin area families go from overwhelmed by options to confident, comfortable, and carried close; judgment free, always, because every parent is doing their best.

Power pumping has become one of the most talked about strategies for increasing milk supply, but before adding another exhausting pumping session to your day, it’s important to make sure you’re addressing the root of the issue first.

Here are 7 things we’d suggest evaluating before power pumping:

✨ Is milk supply actually low — or just perceived low?
An IBCLC can help assess what’s truly going on.
✨ Try using a double electric pump instead of a wearable.
Wearables are convenient, but they’re not always the most effective for establishing or increasing supply.
✨ Check your pump settings.
More suction isn’t always better, and the wrong settings can impact output and comfort.
✨ Fl**ge size matters more than most people realize.
The wrong fit can affect milk removal and even cause pain.
✨ Evaluate latch and milk transfer at the breast.
Sometimes supply concerns are actually transfer concerns.
✨ Assess baby’s oral function.
Tongue ties, tension, and oral restrictions can impact feeding efficiency.
✨ Stay consistent with milk removal.

During the first 3 months, babies typically feed 8–12 times in 24 hours. Frequent, effective milk removal matters more than quick fixes.

Power pumping can absolutely be a useful tool in some situations but it works best when the foundation is already in place. Read more over at our blog today! Link in bio
