Hot sunny summers means lots of time spent outdoors. Whether that’s hikes, pool days or picnics in the park, it’s important to protect your eyes from the sun. Overexposing your eyes to the sun’s UV rays in a short period of time can cause photokeratitis, which is like getting a sunburn on your eye. This causes your eyes to appear red, have a gritty feeling, and be extra sensitive to light.
While photokeratitis doesn’t usually cause permanent damage to your eyes, repeated exposure to the sun increases your risk for developing pterygiums, which are uncomfortable raised bumps on the front of the eye. Additionally UV exposure increases macular degeneration risk and cases cataracts to form more quickly. Keep your eyes healthy by always wearing sunglasses that offer UV protection whenever you are outdoors! We offer sunglasses, photocromatic lenses that darken outside and custom clip ons for any frame. Stop by the office soon to learn more about our many options for UV protective eyewear.
