It’s one of the biggest questions parents ask pediatric physical therapists today: Why are we seeing so much flattening of the head now compared to when we were babies in the 80s? 🤔
The answer actually links directly to the incredibly successful "Back to Sleep" campaign initiated in 1992, which has dramatically reduced SIDS rates—a huge win for baby safety. ❤️
But the equation isn't complete without its crucial second half: Back to Sleep, but Tummy to Play. To encourage that head shape to stay nice and symmetrical, it’s vital to limit time in "containers" (bouncers, swings, car seats) and maximize supervised awake tummy time.
And remember: the AAP does NOT recommend the purchase or use of baby shaping pillows for sleep. A flat, bare crib is always safest.
