This month’s lactation tip is all about pumps! We get so many questions about which pump is best, and the simple answer to that is; the pump that works best for your body is the best one for you. However, it’s important to understand the what’s and why’s of the different pumps.
Suction Pump - These were initially marketed as a milk collectors and helped people were able to passively build their milk stash. In recent years though, lactation professionals have seen people having an accidental oversupply caused by these suction types of pumps. So, it’s important to recognize that the Haakaa and other pumps like this are just that; a pump!
Pros - If it works for you, you can put this on after baby feeds or when the baby is on one side to get the letdown on the other side and store your milk.
Cons - It is really uncomfortable for some people. When used simultaneously with breastfeeding, it might take from what baby would eat on the 2nd side.
Hand Pump - We LOVE a hand pump! These are so handy to have in your bag, keep around when the power goes out (looking at you ERCOT), and anytime you need to relieve a little and still stay attuned to your body.
Pros: Easy to use, lightweight, and portable
Cons: Not as efficient as a double electric pump
Double Electric Pump - These are your primary pumps, your powerhouses. These guys put in the work and provide great stimulation to either initiate or maintain milk supply.
Pros - Very effective and often covered by insurance.
Cons - Learning curve, big and bulky, and not cheap.
Wearable Electric Pump - Who doesn’t love a wearable?? These are fantastic once your milk supply is established and you’re on the go!
Pros: Pump on the go! Very easy to use anywhere.
Cons: Doesn’t yield as much as your primary pump, sometimes harder for those with large chests to use.
Whatever you use, know you have options, there are lots of choices out there, and make sure you work with an IBCLC to ensure the right fit!
